Sylville Smith, 23, was shot near 44th Street and Auer Avenue following a traffic stop Saturday afternoon.
The Milwaukee Police Association also identified Smith as the suspect.
An officer, a 24-year-old man with six years of service with the department, shot Smith during a foot chase. He died at the scene, and Milwaukee police Capt. Mark Stanmeyer said the semiautomatic handgun with which Smith was armed was taken in a burglary in Waukesha in March of this year.
A man who knew Smith said he just felt like crying when he heard the news.
" I just hurry up and got over here and tried to get to his mother and different individuals like that, and we just kind of was at the front line, you know? The police were lined up, and there were hundreds of young men and women that were lined up, but they were angry, and it was just an upsetting thing, and I was upset. The police were upset. Everybody was just upset, real tension," Mario Dickens said.
Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn said Smith had a "lengthy arrest record."
