Mister Ed star Alan Young, friend of the talking horse, dies aged 96

English-born actor-comedianAlanYoung, who was the human sidekick of thetalking horse in the Sixtiessitcom Mister Ed, died on May 19, aged96.

Young, who was born in Northumberland in 1919before his Scottish parents emigrated to Canada, was also a noted voice actor, having performed as thegrumpy Scrooge McDuck and worked on such TV shows as The Smurfs, The Great Mouse Detective andScooby-Doo.

His first breaks came in film (starring with a young Natalie Wood in the 1949 filmChicken Every Sunday, and with Shirley Temple inMr Belvedere Goes to College) before landing his own television show calledThe Alan Young Show. In 1951, he won a Primetime Emmy for outstanding leading actor.

He returned to Hollywood for his biggest film role in 1960, working with director George Pal onThe Time Machine, a 1960 adaptation of the novel by HGWells, starring a time-traveling Rod Taylor.

He was in the mind of comedian George Burns, who ran a TV production company, when they were casting for the show Mr Ed.Burns is said to have told his staff: "GetAlanYoung. He looks like the kind of guy a horse would talk to."
