Bulls' Derrick Rose to undergo knee surgery again

CHICAGO Derrick Roses knee has failed him again.

The Bulls star will have surgery on his right knee for the second straight season, casting doubt on whether the once dynamic point guard will ever be the same after a series of injuries.

The team announced Tuesday night that Rose was feeling pain in his knee, and an MRI exam confirmed a medial meniscus tear.

The 2011 NBA MVP played in only 10 games last season before he had surgery for the same injury in November 2013, shelving him for the year, but the Bulls said a timetable for his return will be determined after the operation.

Its unclear when Rose re-injured the knee. He appeared to be rounding into form last month, averaging 22.6 points over his final 14 games before the All-Star break, but he had struggled since returning to the court after the time off.

Rose became the latest NBA star to be sidelined for a significant period within the past few days.

Chris Bosh will miss the rest of the season after the Heat announced blood clots were found on one of his lungs. Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony (left knee surgery) wont return this season, either.

Thunder star Kevin Durant had surgery on his right foot, and Pelicans big man Anthony Davis has a sprained right shoulder. Both are expected back this season.

Roses status remains to be seen.

Rose had eight points on 1-for-13 shooting while playing almost 33 minutes in Monday nights 87-71 victory over Milwaukee. He averaged 10.7 points on 23.5 percent shooting in Chicagos first three games after the break.

Its a big blow for the surging Bulls (36-21), who have won six of seven and appeared to be picking up steam after a tough stretch. They lead the Central Division by a half-game over Cleveland, but any extended absence for Rose will make it quite difficult for Chicago to hold off LeBron James and the Cavaliers.

James was one of several NBA stars who took to social media to express their support for Rose, who has been dogged by injuries since he won the MVP award:

Rose was limited to 39 games during the 2011-12 season, and tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in Game 1 of the 2012 playoffs against Philadelphia. He missed the next season altogether, and then last season was cut short by the right knee surgery.

Rose, 26, is averaging 18.4 points and 5.0 assists in 46 games this season. He has flashed his MVP form at times, attacking the rim, but his outside shot has been unreliable. He is shooting just 40.7 percent, the second-lowest average of his career, and is committing 3.2 turnovers per game.

The Bulls have shuffled players in and out of the lineup because of various ailments and have struggled to develop continuity after making some big moves last summer. They signed All-Star Pau Gasol, giving them a big scoring presence inside, and with Rose back after missing most of the past two years, the Bulls came in looking to contend for a championship.

Now they wait to see how long Rose will be out with this injury.

Derrick Rose has strained hamstring

CHICAGO -- Derrick Rose has a mild left hamstring strain and is day-to-day, Bullscoach Tom Thibodeau said after Friday's practice.

"He's feeling OK," Thibodeau said. "He's got a mild strain, he's day-to-day. He did some stuff today. We'll see where he is [Saturday] and going forward."

Two and a half years of rehab have changed Derrick Rose's outlook. Story

It's natural for Derrick Rose to be concerned about his long-term health, and we shouldn't berate him for his honesty, Scoop Jackson writes. Story

Rose, who was injured late in the fourth quarter of Thursday night's 100-93 win over the Toronto Raptors, did not need an MRI. Thibodeau said the point guard did some treadmill work during practice.

Rose has already missed four games this season because of sprained ankles. Thibodeau was asked if he thought those injuries may be related to Rose's latest setback.

"Anything is possible, I guess," Thibodeau said. "But I think when a guy comes back who's been out an extended amount of time, there's going to be things that crop up. He's just got to work his way through it.

"He'll be fine. It happens. Those things happen. So just keep putting one foot in front of the other, keep moving forward, and whatever the circumstances are, you deal with them."

Like Bulls center Joakim Noah did Thursday night, veteran power forward Pau Gasol defended Rose and the way he is being treated by critics. While discussing the similarities between Rose and Gasol's former Los Angeles Lakers teammate Kobe Bryant, Gasol acknowledged that he hoped frustrated fans backed off Rose for a while.

"There's so much expectation," Gasol said. "Anything that players of his status do gets so much [attention]. It's pretty much everything. It could be uncomfortable. But the good thing is he should feel comfortable with us and our team, everyone has his back here, and we want the best for him because that's going to be the best for our team. But it would be nice if people could lay off him a little bit and let him be, let him play, let him enjoy the game and compete, and not put pressure on him."

Thibodeau continues to try to take as much pressure off Rose as he can, as well.

"A player like Derrick, you got to understand that this is a lot to go through," Thibodeau said. "He's been out 2 years. We understand people want to see him out there, but we don't want him out there until he's ready to be out there. He's got to work his way through this process. There's going to be some bumps in the road. It's going to work out fine. He's going to be terrific. We all have to believe that that's what's going to happen -- and it will happen. So as long as he's putting everything he has into each and every day, that's all we want him to do."
