  • Notables paid tribute to Kennedy Center honorees
  • Jennifer Hudson sang Al Green's "Simply Beautiful"
  • Lady Gaga sang Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You"
  • The event honors excellence in the arts

(CNN) -- Lady Gaga singing "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You"? Martin Short leading a seeming cast of thousands (OK, dozens) doing "Yankee Doodle Dandy"? Bruno Mars performing "Message in a Bottle"?

It can only be the Kennedy Center Honors.

This year's broadcast, which aired Tuesday night, paid tribute to R&B great Al Green, the multitalented Sting, Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks, dancer Patricia McBride and comedian Lily Tomlin.

It's hard to do wrong with a Green song, and Earth, Wind & Fire led off with a heartfelt version of "Love and Happiness." The band was followed by such performers as Jennifer Hudson ("Simply Beautiful"), Usher ("Let's Stay Together") and Mavis Staples and Sam Moore ("Take Me to the River").

Green was visibly moved by the tribute.

McBride was feted with performances by dancers including Tiler Peck and Misty Copeland, and Hanks enjoyed a speech from David Letterman and Short's song-and-dance routine. (Oh, and Pentatonix did "That Thing You Do!" from the 1996 movie Hanks directed, wrote and appeared in.)

Tomlin received compliments from Garrison Keillor, Jane Fonda and Jane Lynch, among others.

And then there was Sting. Gaga sang to him, giving "Faith in You" a little Green-esque soul. Herbie Hancock played for him. Bruce Springsteen, Mars and members of Sting's musical "The Last Ship" performed for him.

An appreciative Hanks had an amusing way of sizing up the show.

"It's not unlike a very healthy way of watching your life flash before you eyes," he said.

The show was recorded December 7.

Tennessee is curious about ISIS, Mississippi wants Flappy Bird cheats

Tony Avelar | Bloomberg

Google Inc. signage is displayed at the company's headquarters in Mountain View, California

As the end of the year is just around the corner, lots of information about what about who searched for what online is becoming available, and real estate blog Estately decided to see what each state searched for more than any other.

To be clear, these are not the top searches for each state but the searches each state made more than any other.

Texas and Oklahoma searched for information about Ebola. Californians wanted to know about Bitcoin.

So what did states in the Mid-South search for?

In Arkansas users searched for information about former Gov. Mike Huckabee and "Dancing with the Stars." Understandably, Missourians looked for information about Ferguson and NFL player Michael Sam. Alabama wanted information about Florida State Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston.

Mississippi's searches were an eclectic mix, with the number one search being "Flappy Bird cheat" and other top searches including Robin Thicke and wrestler the Ultimate Warrior.

Tennessee searched Google for the phrase "Who is I.S.I.S.?" more than any other state, and also took significant interest in country musician Kevin Sharp.

Playoff Panthers Cause Ticket Troubles

WCNC 12:16 p.m. EST December 30, 2014

Cam Newton(Photo: Kevin C. c*x, Getty Images)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A limited number of tickets for the Carolina Panthers NFC Wild Card Playoff against Arizona sold out quickly.

The tickets went on sale at 8 p.m. Sunday and by Monday morning only single seat tickets were available. There are reports that 7,000 playoff tickets sold out in 15 minutes.

On TicketExchange and Stubhub Monday afternoon, Level 500 tickets were going for about $100 per ticket. The most expensive seats we found were in the lower level of Bank of America Stadium along the 50 yard line. Those are being sold for the premium price of $2,500 each.

With Panther fans buying playoff tickets in a hurry, they should exercise some caution when it comes to what's left.

Experts say Charlotte is a target for ticket counterfeiters.

"Last year for the playoff game, it was in the hundreds," said Tom Bartholomy with the Better Business Bureau. "We get special attention from the scammers."

Bartholomy says Panthers fans are a prime target, because hosting playoff games isn't common ground.

"If we're Green Bay or Seattle that makes the playoffs all the time, it's not as interesting to the counterfeiters because the demand is pretty well known," Bartholomy said.

If you're buying online, Bartholomy recommends NFL Ticket Exchange, or StubHub.

"They're able to authenticate them through the serial numbers that are on the tickets," Bartholomy said.

Avoid sites that don't, like craigslist.

"You can get the same tickets here for $50 less," Bartholomy said. "Well, there's a risk."

He says scalping on game day can be risky, too.

"By the time you get to the gate and find out it's not real, that guy's long gone," Bartholomy said.

If you're going to scalp, he recommends doing it from someone who's selling right outside the gate where police are nearby. As for warning signs on the tickets themselves, the ticket office doesn't have any hard-copy ones yet, but looking at ones from the regular season, always keep an eye out for the letters "PSL." It stands for Personal Seat License and 90% of real Panthers tickets have it, but then again, so could the counterfeits.

"Holding one real one and one counterfeit one in your hand, they look identical," Bartholomy said.

There is some hope Panthers fans: since the team didn't clinch their playoff berth until Sunday night, counterfeiters don't have much time to work with before kickoff on Saturday afternoon.

"With this quick of a turn, hopefully they'll make some mistakes," Bartholomy said.

Bartholomy says even paying attention to small details, like the back of the ticket can make a difference. The ticket office is open until 5:30 P.M. on weekdays and should have some examples later in the week.

Large crowds expected for Belk Bowl, Fan Fest in uptown

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Freshman Nick Chubb ran for a career-high 266 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 13 Georgia overcame an injury to starting quarterback Hutson Mason to beat 20th-ranked Louisville 37-14 in the BelkBowl on Tuesday night.

Chubb averaged 8 yards per carry and the Bulldogs (10-3) piled up 301 yards rushing against the nation's second-best run defense.

Mason threw for 149 yards and a touchdown before leaving with blurred vision in the second quarter with the Bulldogs ahead 20-7. He was replaced by Brice Ramsey, whose primary duty was to hand the ball off to Chubb.

Georgia's defense came up with four turnovers, with Dominick Sanders recording two interceptions.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Kyle Bolin made his first career start for Louisville and finished 20 of 40 for 301 yards with two interceptions and one touchdown. Brandon Radcliff ran for 91 yards and a touchdown.

The Georgia running game appears to be in good hands, even with Todd Gurley headed to the NFL.

Chubb's rushing total was second highest in school history, behind only Herschel Walker's 283 yards rushing against Vanderbilt in 1980.

Chubb finished his first season at Georgia by running for 1,323 yards and 12 touchdowns in last eight games after taking over as the primary ball carrier after the NCCA suspended Gurley for four games for taking $3,000 for autographed memorabilia and other items over two years. Gurley later injured his knee in his first game back from the injury.

Chubb set a new BelkBowl rushing record, eclipsing the 174-yard effort set by Boston College's Andrew Callender in 2004.

The Bulldogs leaned heavily on the 5-foot-10, 228-pound Chubb after Mason left the game and Ramsey was intercepted on his first play from scrimmage.

Louisville's defense came into the game allowing just 93.7 yards per game on the ground. Chubb nearly had that in the first half, rushing for 78 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown. He added an 82-yard run in the second half that led to another Georgia score.

Louisville never led.

The Bulldogs roared to a 20-7 lead in the first half as Mason found wide open flanker Chris Conley down the middle of the field for a 44-yard touchdown strike for a 7-0 lead before Chubb broke off a 31-yard scoring run.

Leading 17-7, the Bulldogs had two chances to blow the game open late in the half when Sanders intercepted Louisville backup quarterback Reggie Bonnafon and returned it 40 yards to the 8-yard line. But Georgia would have to settle for a 22-yard field goal by Marshall Morgan after Malcolm Mitchell couldn't come down with a high pass from Mason in the end zone.

With his team down 13, Louisville coach Bobby Petrino called for a fake punt from his own 31 on fourth and 5, but punter Ryan Johnson couldn't hook up with a wide open Gerald Christian. Ramsey, however, replaced Mason on Georgia's next possession and gave the ball right back to Louisville when he was intercepted on his first play from scrimmage.

The Bulldogs (10-3) made it a three-possession game late in the third quarter when Chubb broke free from his own 3 and raced 82 yards, setting up a 2-yard touchdown run by Sony Michel.

Louisville's only scores came on an 11-yard scoring strike from Bolin to Christian and a 6-yard run by Radcliff.

Share Oklahoma-Clemson football: Jamelle...

Jamelle Holieway quarterbacked Oklahoma to the 1985 national championship. But Holieways most unforgettable play came three years later. And its not a pleasant memory.

In the first quarter of the OU-Clemson Florida Citrus Bowl 26 years ago, the Sooners reached second-and-goal from the Tiger 1-yard line. OU ran a simple wishbone play, and fullback Leon Perry stormed into the end zone.

But Perry didnt have the ball. Holieway kept, circled outside, found no running room, reversed field and scrambled his way to an 18-yard loss. The Sooners settled for a field goal and didnt score a touchdown all day, in a 13-6 loss.

Ill be honest with you, I was being greedy, Holieway said Sunday. Trying to score. Made a bad decision and it cost us the game.

Thats a little harsh. But it did cost the Sooners a touchdown, and OU didnt score a TD in its final 10 quarters of that 1988 season.

Holieways career was derailed by a major knee injury in mid-season 1987. He started early in 1988, but not after a 23-7 loss at Southern Cal in September. Charles Thompson suffered a broken leg on the final play of the regular-season finale, a 7-3 loss to Nebraska, so Holieway took back over.

I was fortunate to play in the game, Holieway said. It was one of those things. I hate the way that it ended.

After the game, Holieway said he made a bad read on the option play. But a quarter century later, he admits he sought the spotlight.

It was just being selfish, knowing that was my last game in an OU uniform, Holieway said. I wanted to go out on top, but I didnt.

Sofia Vergara, Joe Manganiello are reportedly engaged

Ay, Joe! Sofia Vergara is reportedly engaged to hunky beau Joe Manganiello after dating for six months.

Take a second to let that all sink in. Or ponder natural selection.

The engagement news came via E! News, Page Six and Us Weekly on Monday, which reported that the "True Blood" actor proposed to the "Modern Family" star on Christmas Day.

Neither Vegrara nor Manganiello publicly confirmed the news, and reps for both actors did not respond to requests for comment.

If hot couple-o-meters existed, this comely pair sent them through the roof since being first linked in July.

Engagement rumors started this month when the duo was spotted buying a bauble for the actress, E! News reported. A ring on her left ring finger sparkled in one of many holiday photos the actress posted over the weekend.

Vergara, 42, and Manganiello spent Christmas and Manganiello's 38th birthday in Hawaii with family. On Sunday, the Colombian actress took to WhoSay to share her well wishes for her beau.

"Happy happy bday to my love and best friend ... to the one that makes me laugh like crazy!have a healthy wonderfull year babe!!!@joemanganiello," she wrote, posting a snapshot hugging her man.

It'll be the first marriage for Manganiello and the second for Vergara, who wed Joe Gonzalez when she was 18. The two have an adult son named Manolo together.

The Emmy-nominated actress announced in May that she called off her engagement to her man of nearly four years, Nick Loeb, citing hectic work schedules keeping them apart.

Before she and Manganiello started dating, the "Magic Mike" star revealed in People magazine's hottest bachelors issue that Vergara was his celebrity crush.

"She's got the curves, she's got a beautiful face, beautiful hair, just gorgeous. Naturally beautiful. She's feisty!" he said.

The couple first met in May at the White House Correspondents' Dinner (where he was also photographed staring at her famous curves), but the actress was still with Loeb at the time and Manganiello said he wasn't a "home-wrecker."

"There was a picture someone snapped at the White House Correspondents' Dinner where they caught me looking at Sofia Vergara's b**t," he said. "When you talk about being manipulated, that's what I'm talking about. It's like a moment of zen. There is nothing in my brain. If only I could meditate that well. I don't go after other people's women. She's got a guy. If she was single, I would be like, poof!"

The Italian actor later said on "On Air With Ryan Seacrest" that he had "forgotten" he had said those things about his lady love.

"And when the magazine came out, by that time, we were seeing each other and when I got the magazine and opened it up and read it, I forgot I said that. I started laughing."

Excuse me while I weep. Follow me on Twitter @NardineSaad.

Greg Cosell's Look Ahead: The Pittsburgh Steelers' potent offense

The Pittsburgh Steelers offense is really potent, and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is playing a different way. Its working for him.

Roethlisberger has been almost exclusively a pocket passer over the last month or so. And he has been very efficient. You might not see him on the highlights as often because he doesnt make those Roethlisberger plays where he buys time and makes a throw downfield. But I cant recall a time where he has played this well from the pocket for this long. Hes just a big oak tree in the pocket going through progressions.

[Join FanDuel.com's $2.5M Week 17 fantasy league: $25 to enter; top 21,840 teams paid]

A 19-yard throw to Antonio Brown last week against the Kansas City Chiefs is a good example of his patience and command in the pocket. Even with a muddied pocket around him, he stood in for a long time, never left the pocket and delivered the ball effectively. Its not a spectacular play, but its a very good one.

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

The other tweak the Steelers have made is theyve used more empty sets than any other team in the NFL. There are multiple benefits for Pittsburgh with empty sets. It helps get more talented and explosive receivers on the field; the Steelers are deep there. Also, I know Roethlisberger has to love the empty sets because it defines the defense before the snap. If youre going to blitz you have to show it before the snap, because you cant bring a guy from too far away on a blitz.

We know the talent the Steelers have on offense. LeVeon Bell might be the best back in the NFL, although the Steelers havent run the ball that well the last two weeks (which is a combination of Bell and the offensive line). Antonio Brown is a great receiver, he might be the best route runner in the NFL with outstanding quickness in and out of breaks. And Roethlisberger is playing well from the pocket. The Steelers offense is capable of beating a defense in many ways, because theyre personnel and formation diverse with power run elements and explosive pass elements.

How will the Bengals defend them on Sunday night? One thing they did on Monday night against Peyton Manning and the Broncos was run a lot of dime with six defensive backs. They had run only 32 snaps of dime all season before the Broncos game, then ran 18 snaps of it against Denver, with safety Taylor Mays as the dime defender. That gave Manning a new look he hadnt really seen on film, and the Bengals played well against him. The Bengals also had a lot of late movement just before the snap to try to throw off Manning. Will the Bengals continue to use that dime look against a deep Steelers team? Its hard to say for sure but its something to watch.

Panthers' diverse running game

The Carolina Panthers have gotten back in the NFC South race, and will play for the division title on Sunday at Atlanta, by doing many of the same things that make the Seattle Seahawks successful.

The Seahawks have a lot of multiple options within their run plays, and the Panthers have done that lately too. That makes sense for them because running the ball is what quarterback Cam Newton does best now. Youre not trying to teach him to be a pocket quarterback at this point in the season; youre trying to win football games.

Heres an example of the type of concept Carolina is using. Early in the fourth quarter against Atlanta in Week 11, the Panthers combined a running-back sweep and quarterback power run within the same play. Newton gained 15 yards. Its a really cool concept.

(NFL.com screen shot)

(NFL.com screen shot)

The Panthers need to win to make the playoffs, so expect to see them use a lot of creative options in the running game on Sunday.

Search expands for AirAsia Flight QZ8501, likely at 'bottom of the sea'

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • NEW: Search will expand to four more areas Tuesday, Indonesia says
  • NEW: France dispatches two investigators
  • Indonesian official: "Our early conjecture is that the plane is in the bottom of the sea"
  • Reports of objects found don't necessarily indicate a sign of the plane, official says

(CNN) -- The search for a missing airliner with 162 people aboard will expand Tuesday, the Indonesian government announced.

Four additional areas will be searched, the national search and rescue agency said.

Seven zones were patrolled Monday, the second day of searching for AirAsia Flight QZ8501.

So far, the search has been fruitless.

"Our early conjecture is that the plane is in the bottom of the sea," said Bambang Sulistyo, the head of the search and rescue agency. That belief is based on the plane's flight track and last known coordinates.

Officials may need help from other countries for an underwater search, he said.

France dispatched two investigators to Indonesia. They are due to arrive in Jakarta on Monday, France's Foreign Ministry said.

The missing plane is made by Airbus, a French company.

Rescuers say weather was probably a factor in the plane's disappearance.

What role did weather play?

Large waves and clouds hampered the search for the plane Sunday and Monday. But Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla told reporters his country will not give up or set a time limit for the operation.

A possible oil slick within the search zone has been discounted as not being from an airplane, Indonesian authorities told CNN. Likewise, reports of a very faint flight recorder "ping" are false, Indonesian local media reported.

There were reports of objects found in the search zone, but given that the area has a great deal of traffic along the water, authorities have said objects found won't automatically indicate a sign of the plane.

Kalla told CNN there were "some reports from Australia" about possible objects found, but it was unclear whether they were from the plane.

Report: Higher altitude request denied

AirAsia says air traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft at 7:24 a.m. Sunday, Singapore time (6:24 a.m. in Indonesia).

The plane, flying from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore, went missing as it flew over the Java Sea between the islands of Belitung and Borneo -- a heavily traveled shipping channel with shallow waters -- Indonesian authorities said.

Before the plane, an Airbus A320-200, lost contact with air traffic controllers, one of the pilots asked to change course and fly at a higher altitude because of bad weather, officials said. Heavy thunderstorms were reported in the area at the time.

Air traffic control approved the pilot's request to turn left but denied permission for the plane to climb to 38,000 feet from 32,000 feet, Djoko Murjatmodjo, an aviation official at the Indonesian Transport Ministry, told the national newspaper Kompas.

The increased altitude request was denied because there was another plane flying at that height, he said.

Djoko suggested that Flight 8501 ascended despite air traffic control denying it permission.

AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes said storm clouds caused the pilot to ask for a flight plan change. But he added, "We don't want to speculate whether weather was a factor. We really don't know."

Once the aircraft is found, there will be a proper investigation, Fernandes said.

In addition to Indonesia's teams, several other countries have joined the hunt for the missing plane.

A C-130 plane from Singapore has been participating in the search, and the country's military says it's sending two more ships to the search area. Malaysia's transportation minister said his country has deployed three vessels and three aircraft to assist in the search. And the Royal Australian Air Force said Monday that it was deploying a patrol plane to help.

The U.S. Navy Seventh Fleet said it stands ready to assist the search efforts but so far hasn't been asked to help.

Indonesia has reached out to the United Kingdom, France and the United States for help with sonar technology that may be needed for an underwater search, Sulistyo told reporters Monday.

Anxious wait for relatives

Several dozen anguished family members of the passengers met with airport and airline officials in a closed-door briefing Monday at the airport.

As they waited for news, some relatives took cell phone pictures of a flight manifest posted on a wall. The black-and-white papers showed every passenger's name and seat number, but not their fate.

Others simply sat and dabbed tears from their eyes.

Oei Endang Sulsilowati and her daughter were looking for information about her brother, his wife and their two children.

"We don't know what to do," Sulsilowati said. "We are just waiting for news."

"Our concern right now is for the relatives and the next of kin," Fernandes said during a news conference in Surabaya.

Some police said authorities were seeking additional materials to help identify passengers, such as photos with close-ups of teeth, DNA, or fingerprints. But police later told CNN they were not immediately seeking these materials.

East Java Police have set up a disaster victims identification area at the Surabaya airport.

Of the people on board the passenger jet, 155 are Indonesian, three are South Korean, one is British, one is French, one is Malaysian and one is Singaporean, the airline said.

Eighteen children, including one infant, are among the passengers, the carrier said. Seven of the people on board are crew members.

Families of AirAsia flight passengers given support through the 'nightmare'

The MH370 mystery

AirAsia, a successful budget airline group headquartered in Malaysia, had a clean safety record until the disappearance of Flight 8501. The missing plane is operated by the company's Indonesian affiliate.

The loss of contact with the plane comes nearly 10 months after the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which dropped off radar over Southeast Asia on March 8 with 239 people on board.

AirAsia and MH370 cases are very different

Searchers have yet to find any remains of Flight 370, which officials believe went down in the southern Indian Ocean after mysteriously flying thousands of kilometers away from its planned route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

But some aviation experts don't think the search for Flight 8501 will be as challenging as the hunt for MH370.

"We are not talking about the deep Indian Ocean here," CNN aviation correspondent Richard Quest said. "We are talking about congested airspace around Southeast Asia. There will be much better radar coverage. There's certainly better air traffic control coverage."

CNN's Susanna Capelouto, Andrew Stevens and Paula Hancocks contributed to this report. Azieza Uhnavy also contributed to this report.

Nebraska Football: Huskers' Loss to USC a Fitting End to Bo Pelini Era

Donald Miralle/Getty Images

When time expired at the Holiday Bowl, it was official. The Bo Pelini era was over at Nebraska. It was a fitting ending, too.

That's not to say that the Huskers didn't put up a fight. They did. It just wasn't enough. And isn't that what feels the most familiar about Pelini's time at Nebraska?

During his tenure, Pelini never had less than four losses with the Huskers. On the other hand, he also never had less than nine wins. The struggle was that the former Nebraska head coach just couldn't get over the hump.

Against USC, Nebraska faced the same issue. That's why the 45-42 loss at the hands of USC stings so much. The Huskers could have won. The opportunities were there. It just didn't pan out.

You can blame some of it on the play calls. There were two opportunities where Nebraska left two field goals on the field in favor of going for it on fourth down. Neither time resulted in what the Huskers wanted.

It could also be blamed on the mentality of the Nebraska team. After a rocky month, it was clear there was a lot of emotions on the field. At one point, 93.7 The Ticket's John Gaskins noted that Nebraska coaches were fighting on the sidelines while interim head coach Barney Cotton broke them up.

However, it seems like Pelini's memory is what put the fight in the Nebraska players. From an empty bus seat in his honor, to his name placed on helmet decals and towels, Pelini was everywhere with the Huskers. In this final game before the new coaching staff takes over, it felt like Pelini's staff could finally pull it off.

Against Michigan State, Wisconsin and Minnesota, Nebraska was unable to overcome the hump in 2014. The Huskers got close against Michigan State and Minnesota, rallying late to keep the hope alive. It just wasn't enough in either game.

That's always been the challenge for Nebraska under Pelini. Defeating ranked opponents and winning in the national spotlight have plagued the Huskers and it became clear that Pelini wasn't sure how to fix the problem.

Nebraska can still be proud of the performance against the Trojans, though. The Huskers finished with 525 total offensive yards and some strong showings from the Blackshirts.

Senior I-back AmeerAbdullah increased his career rushing total to 4,588 yards, which was only 192 yards shy of Mike Roziers Nebraska record of 4,780 career rushing yards. Freshman wide receiverDeMornay Pierson-El had a career-high eight receptions, which also set aNebraska bowl record and freshman safety Kieron Williams blocked two USC punts in the game. And those are just to name a few of those who made big plays for Nebraska.

Yet, it still wasn't enough and it feels oddly similar. Even the one second that was added back on the clock (by Big 12 referees) at the end felt familiar to a certain moment in Big 12 history. It was enough to even get former Texas head coach Mack Brown talking.

After the game, Cotton answered a question about the final attempt to go for it on fourth down.

"I was very proud of them. ... We just came up a little short at the end," he said.

Yet, that comment about one play felt like it could sum up much more. After all, Pelini came up short many times during his tenure, especially in big games. He was 9-17 against ranked opponents for the Huskers (he was 9-14 to start the season, per The Wall Street Journal),which left many fans hoping for more.

The Holiday Bowl was the end of one era for Nebraska, but it's also the beginning of another. Will things be different?

Only time, and a fair chance to Mike Riley, will tell.

All quotes obtained via the Huskers post-game press conference, unless otherwise noted.

AirAsia Flight From Indonesia To Singapore Loses Contact With Air Traffic Control

An AirAsia flight traveling from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore with 162 people on board lost contact with air traffic control early Sunday morning, the airline confirmed. Indonesia quickly launched a search to locate the missing plane, but by Sunday night, most search and rescue operations were halted for the day, the plane still unaccounted for.

Flight QZ 8501 -- an Airbus 320-200 -- lost communication with Indonesia's Surabaya Juanda International Airport at 7:24 Singapore time on Sunday morning, the airline said. The plane "was requesting deviation due to enroute weather before communication with the aircraft was lost," AirAsia said in a statement.

"The weather was not good -- it was bad -- at the estimated location the plane lost contact," Indonesian Transport Ministry official Hadi Mustafa said.

Mustafa said the plane lost contact somewhere between Kalimantan on Borneo island and Belitung island, about 42 minutes after the jet took off.

AirAsia Indonesia CEO Sunu Widyatmoko said that the airline is "deeply shocked and saddened" by the disappearance.

We are deeply shocked and saddened by this incident," he said in a Facebook post. "We are cooperating with the relevant authorities to the fullest extent to determine the cause of this incident. In the meantime, our main priority is keeping the families of our passengers and colleagues informed on the latest developments.

The ministry's air transportation director Joko Muryo Atmodjo said no distress signal had been sent, adding, "Therefore we cannot assume anything yet."

"We are coordinating with [the] rescue team and looking for its position. We believe it is somewhere between Tanjung Pandan, a town on Belitung island, and Kalimantan," Atmodjo said .

The plane took off at 5:20 a.m. local time in Surabaya and was scheduled to land at 8:30 a.m. in Singapore, according to AFP.

155 passengers, two pilots and five crew members were on board the flight, AirAsia said in a statement. The passengers and crew included 155 Indonesians, three South Koreans, one Singaporean, one Malaysian, one French citizen and one British. The captain was Indonesian, the co-captain French. 16 children and one infant were among the passengers, AirAsia said.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, one woman present at a crisis center at the Changi Airport had seven family members on the flight, including her mother and brother.

Malaysia, Singapore and Australia offered to assist the search for the plane. AirAsia said it was "cooperating fully" with the efforts, and set up a call center for relatives of those aboard the plane.

AirAsia has established an Emergency Call Centre that is available for family or friends of those who may have been on board the aircraft. The number is: +622129850801.

Indonesia's Transport Ministry said six ships and two helicopters were deployed to search for the missing flight. Malaysia contributed three navy ships and three aircraft to help in the search. Singapore sent a C130 aircraft, officials said. Despite the coalition of countries looking for Flight QZ 8501, Sunday night fell with the plane still missing, prompting Indonesia to call off the search for the day. By 8:30 p.m. local time, all air search efforts were halted, though several boats continued the hunt. The full search was expected to resume around 6 a.m.

The U.S. also offered support for the search. Spokespersons for the National Transportation Safety Board and the State Department said that the agencies are monitoring the situation and "ready to assist" the rescue team if needed.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore released a statement early Sunday saying "a waiting area, and all necessary facilities and support have been set up for relatives and friends of the affected passengers" at Changi Airport. By Sunday evening, dozens of those connected to the passengers had registered at the waiting area. Tony Fernandes, the CEO of AirAsia, announced he would go to Surabaya where most of the passengers were from. "This is my worst nightmare," he wrote on Twitter.

The A320 is Airbuss best-selling jet family, with more than 6,000 planes in operation. In a statement, Airbus said that the plane that went missing came off the production line in 2008, and had conducted approximately 13,600 flights, for a total of about 23,000 flight hours. Airbus announced it would provide its full assistance to the investigation, and said the "thoughts of the Airbus management and staff are with all those affected by Flight QZ 8501."

As news of the missing flight unfolded, AirAsia changed the color of the logos on their social media channels from red to grey. AirAsia, which is headquartered in Malaysia, is one of the fastest growing low-cost carriers in Asia. It has never lost a plane before, according to the Associated Press.

The disappearance of the AirAsia flight is the third air incident of 2014 that involves Malaysia, the Associated Press notes. Malaysia's national carrier, Malaysia Airlines, suffered two disasters in 2014. In March, the airline lost contact with flight MH370 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew aboard. It remains missing. In July, flight MH17 was downed over eastern Ukraine, killing 298 people. Following the news of Flight 8501's disappearance, Malaysia Airlines offered its support on Twitter.

According to a White House pool report, U.S. President Barack Obama was briefed on the missing flight, and "White House officials will continue to monitor the situation." Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong wrote on Twitter that he was "saddened" to hear about the missing plane. "My thoughts are with the passengers and their families," he said. Malaysia's Prime Minister Mohammad Najib Razak said his country "stands ready to help."

"Our hearts and hopes are with the passengers and families of AirAsia QZ8501," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry tweeted.

CORRECTION: This article has been updated to reflect that Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared while traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, not from Jakarta.

WATCH: 'Divergent' fans get sneak peek of 'Insurgent' sequel

LOS ANGELES The first film adaptation of Veronica Roths Divergent novels was one of the most popular new Hollywood franchises of 2014, grossing more than $150 million at the domestic box office.

Now, fans can close out the year with a look at the much-anticipated sequel, Insurgent, which is due out March 2015.

Shailene Woodley reprises the role of Tris, a teen living in a dystopian future where people are divided into categories based on character attributes. Tris and her fellow divergents, who dont fit into any of the categories, continue their struggle to survive as Jeanine Matthews (played by Kate Winslet) hunts them down.

A trailer released this week shows a greater emphasis on action scenes this go-around. Fans of the trilogy might also notice that Tris has a pixie cut in this installment, even though the characters hair is not that short in the book.

Woodley says director Robert Schwentke granted her request to keep her naturally short hair which she cut for her role in another young adult novel adaptation, The Fault in Our Stars instead of wearing a wig.

I think wigs always look wiggy, especially in an action movie, Woodley told Buzzfeed.

Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, Omega Ruby soundtracks now on iTunes

If you found an iTunes gift card stuffed in your stocking this week, feel free to think of it as a real-world Master Ball from the Pokemon series. Why? Because you can use it to capture Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre (or at least their theme songs) thanks to the recent release of the Pokemon Omega Ruby and Pokemon Alpha Sapphire soundtracks.

There are 160 songs waiting to be captured by your iPod/computer hard drive, all for $9.99. We gave the games four and a half stars in our review, writing that, "Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire do little to overhaul the major pillars of a series that's long relied on the same set of classic ideas, but they don't have to. The core mechanics of Pokemon remain immensely addictive, and Game Freak's latest coat of polish only enhances an already captivating adventure."

PSN status and Xbox Live status: Playstation network down, Live is up mostly

PSN status & Xbox Live status update today: Playstation network going down repeatedly

Update: Sony said that things are getting back to normal, finally. The company that has been witnessing one hack after the other tweeted on its support line that PS3, PS4 and Vita network services are gradually coming back online, thank you for your patience. Nonetheless these words didnt seem to be very reassuring for many of its harassed users who were unable to play games and get connected to their friends. But some experts said that the few remaining glitches may be due to the ongoing maintenance work. The company went on to accept that there were still some people around who were facing sign-in issues on PS3 and PS4. It said that its officials and support staff are working round the clock to restore complete service.

Gamers across the world have been hit really, really hard as Xbox live and Sony Playstation networks didnt work and they felt harassed throughout the day. On day one after the alleged hack of the two networks by very accomplished hackers, the users of the two networks had failed to access them and the same happened on day 2 too.

Cyber attack was so severe that it disrupted the complete functioning of Xbox live and Sony Playstation. Though now Sony and Microsoft claim that their networks are back completely, users continue to complain about the very erratic functioning of the respective networks.

The hacking was allegedly the handiwork of very professional looking hackers who call them Lizard Squad. It is being said that the hacking of the two most popular networks among the gaming enthusiasts could have affected more than 160 million gamers hailing from every corner of the world. this caused revenue loss to the tune of millions and millions of dollars to the two companies. There was a sort of welcome interventions by none other than Kim Dotcom, the burly internet entrepreneur came up with an offer to the hackers to give them free lifetime use of his file storage service. Hackers resorted to distributed denial of service ,DDOS, to leave the two networks almost inaccessible for their genuine users.

So a large number of people who had the game on their own computers, but as gaming is often played with online authentications, the ones with genuine copies couldnt play their games.

The two networks are used together by around 155 million users. Sonys PlayStation Network (PSN) is used by as many as 110 million people while Xbox Live is used by another 46 million people.

In the meantime there is good news for gamers. In latest update Microsofts Xbox is running a status page saying Xbox Lives core services are back online and functioning normally, though there are reports that the network is still is having issues with Purchase and Content Usage, watching live TV. Meanwhile site monitor DownDirector.com is saying that there are many complaints of the site going down dramatically.

On the other hand Sony PlayStation Network is still to become normally accessible. A Twitter update says that they are heading back into no ETA territory as that network remains paralyzed by an apparent DDoS attack beginning on Christmas morning. This is giving harrowing time to gaming enthusiasts across the world.

'Exodus: Gods and Kings' Banned in Egypt Over 'Historical Inaccuracies'

The film, "Exodus: G*d and Kings," opened in theaters across the United States on December 12, 2014.

Ridley Scott's latest film "Exodus: Gods and Kings" starring Christian Bale has been banned in Egypt after censors deemed the film historically inaccurate.

The blockbuster was set to premiere in both Egypt and Morocco on Friday, according to several reports. The Egyptian censorship board said that "Exodus," which is based on the biblical book of Exodus, was historically inaccurate since it depicts Jews building the Pyramids, according to theBBC. Moreover, the Hollywood film portrays an earthquake, not a miracle, causing the Red Sea to part.

"It contains historical fallacies," Egyptian censorship board head Abdul Sattar Fathy said in a statement, according to Egypt's news portal, Mobtada.Fathy also cited the film's depiction of Moses that was similar to a general in an army as opposed to the biblical prophet who is highly revered in the Abrahamic religions of Islam, Judaism and Christianity.

In Morocco, officials had given "Exodus" a premiere date, but as of Friday, theater managers told Medias24 that the film was now banned from being screened.

"Exodus: Gods and Kings" stars Bale as Moses who leads Hebrews to freedom after centuries of enslavement in Egypt. The film, which had a budget of $140 million, showcases each of the 10 plagues, plus more, that rain down upon Egypt as a warning from G*d to release the Hebrews. The film also includes the burning bush and the aforementioned parting of the Red Sea.

The Moroccan and Egyptian bans are the most recent controversy surrounding Scott's film. Before its Dec. 9 premiere worldwide, thousands of petitioners agreed to boycott "Exodus," and the director was accused of racist casting after hiring Bale, Joel Edgerton, Aaron Paul and Sigourney Weaver in each major role. Scott dismissed the "whitewashing" criticism, though.

"I say, 'Get a life,'" the director told The Associated Pressin reference to his critics, before adding that he assembled "the best possible cast on a budget of this scale."

Despite the controversy, "Exodus" earned $24.1 million in its first week.

Snow stays away for rest of the year, top five month for least amount of snow ...

Snow stays away for rest of the year, top five month for least amount of snowpossible

(Dec. 26, 2014) December could shape up to be one of the least snowiest on record here in Indianapolis. As of today the city has only recorded a tenth of an inch of snow. This places December 2014 in a tie for third when it comes to least amounts of snow. The least snow ever recorded in December was all the way back in 1889 when they recorded no snow whatsoever for the month. In 1940 and 1931 we recorded just trace amounts of snow for the month. Indianapolis has had two other years where only a tenth of an inch of snow was recorded in December (1941 and 1896).

Heading into this week it looked like we would have two solid chances for snow including the system on Christmas Eve that brought snow to places north and west of Indianapolis. The second system now appears to have dried up as next week looks dry behind a weekend system that will bring just rain to the area. There will still be a chance for some flurries as we head into Monday and Tuesday of next week, but likely wont see any accumulation from that.

Today

After a high of 41 on Christmas we will be warmer than that today. Some communities will even hit 50 degrees. I think Indianapolis hits the upper 40s today with highs tracking warmer on Saturday even with a rising rain chance.

The first part of today will be clear with clouds rolling in from the west as we head into the afternoon. By 7 p.m. we should be dealing with mostly cloudy to overcast skies. Winds today will be out of the SSW at 7 12 mph.

This weekend

Saturday will start off dry but rain chances will begin to go up as we head into the afternoon. At this time it appears a half inch could fall from Saturday afternoon to very early on Sunday morning.

The rain will be along and ahead of a cold front with temperatures much colder on Sunday. Saturday highs will likely hit the mid-50s ahead of the rain. Clouds will keep temperatures up Saturday night into Sunday.

Sundays highs may be reached just after midnight but model data continues to show the high reached in the afternoon. Either way I think we see a Sunday high of around 40 degrees. Rain will come to an end early but it does not appear clouds will be clear. In fact we are expecting to see overcast skies from Monday morning through Wednesday.

LeBron James Return To Miami Helps NBA Ratings Rebound On ABC, Boosts ...

LeBron James first game back in Miami since re-joining Cleveland highlighted NBAs Christmas Day coverage, airing in ABCs late-afternoon window once reserved for the L.A. Lakers and its starKobe Bryant. Further indicatinghow Lakers fortunes have fallen lately, for the first time ever, the onceratings juggernaut team was dropped from the ABC Christmas Day lineup and didnt even make it on ESPN.

The Heat-Cavaliers face-off, won by Miami 101-91, drew a 5.5 overnight rating, up 12% from last years game between the Heat and L.A. Lakers. In Miami, the matchuplogged a massive 17.2 rating, making it the highest-rated NBA regular-season game ever in the market.

In the early ABC window, the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the San Antonio Spurs, 114-106, in a rematch of the 2014 Western Conference Finals. The broadcast delivered a 4.0 rating, up +8%percent from Oklahoma Citys lopsided victory over the Knicks in 2013. Last year, both games on ABC tumbled year-to-year (-18% and -37%) as two of the leagues biggest stars, New York Knicks Carmelo Anthony and the Lakers Kobe Bryant, were sidelined with injuries. The average for the doubleheader yesterday was a 4.8.

In an unusual setup thus year, ABC and ESPN covered three of the five NBA Christmas Day games instead of all five as the two networks normally do. The lone game on ESPN yesterday wasWashington Wizards 102-91 victory over the New York Knicks at noon ET, which delivered a 2.1 overnight rating, down -9% from the corresponding game between the Chicago Bulls and the Brooklyn Nets last year. InWashington D.C., the matchup posted a 3.6, the second-highest rated Wizards regular-season game on ESPN ever in the market.

Powered by ABCs gains, ABCs and ESPNs Christmas Day tripleheader combined averaged a 4.0 overnight rating, up +8% from the comparable three windows in 2013.Vs. the five-game average last year, the tripleheader was up +29%.

As usual, the NBA coverage on ABC gave the networks primetime Christmas lineup a boost. The network dominated last night with a 1.8 average adults 18-49 rating forthe animated Dr. Seuss How The Grinch Stole Christmasspecial (1.9, a five-year high) and the featureDr. Seuss How The Grinch Stole Christmas(1.8 ). They were up +58% and +38%, respectively, from last year when the two aired on Christmas Eve.

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (20th Century Fox, PG)

|Print|

We have seen it all before in the previous two movies; of course, that does not make it any less entertaining.

After a couple years of silence, we return to the story of Larry Daley (Ben Stiller), now promoted to director of nighttime operations, and his lively dusk-till-dawn experiences. Once again directed by Shawn Levy, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb starts off with an Indiana Jonesstyled flashback, taking us to the archaeological discovery of the magical Tablet of Akmenrah, which is responsible for all of the mystical powers given to the displays at the American Museum of Natural History.

During a gala dinner for all of Manhattans elite, the reopening of the Hayden Planetarium, we discover a glitch in the magic, with its malfunctioning exhibits attacking the valued guests. The problem of the corroding golden tablet is traced to Akmenrah (Rami Malek) and the Egyptian exhibition. Daley, his now teenage son Nicky (Skyler Gisondo, taking over from Jake Cherry), and all his companions head across the pond to London to get advice from Akmenrahs father Merenkahre (Ben Kingsley), attempting to fix the problem before it is too late and all of our dear friends are turned back to being lifeless wax statues forever.

Naturally, the rest of the films 97 minutes consist of our well-known company of Larrys friendsTeddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams), Jedediah (Owen Wilson), Octavius (Steve Coogan), Attila the Hun (Patrick Gallagher), Sacajawea (Mizuo Peck), and the rude capuchin monkeyaccompanying him to play something between hide-and-seek and catch, at first only inside the British Museum, but later also outside, in the streets of London.

Even though this family adventure comedy brings in new facessuch as Sir Lancelot (Dan Stevens) the knight in shining armor searching for the Holy Grail, Rebel Wilson as a s*x-deprived English security guard, and Laa (Daleys new Neanderthal ancestor addition, also played by Stiller), as well as a brief, yet unexpectedly funny appearance on a theater stage in London by Hugh Jackman and Andrea Martinnothing super innovative has been brought to the new installment of the series. We have seen it all before in the previous two movies; of course, that does not make it any less entertaining.

There are a few funny lines and moments (usually when Kingsley is present), just as there are the awkward, not-so-funny ones (all those previously used in the earlier movies), but in general, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb is a pleasant, easy watch. My favorite scene is a clever chase for the tablet of Akmenrah inside one of M. C. Eschers optical illusion prints Relativity, where the worlds rules of gravity do not apply.

Starring the late greats Robin Williams and Mickey Rooney in their final performances, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb gives a nice farewell to the museum seriesleaving the door cracked open a tiny bit, just in case. | Lea Vrbelov

Billy Magnussen is undeniably one of the breakout stars of the new Into the Woods movie, so lets take a minute to get to know him better!

The 29-year-old actor landed the role in the movie musical after the films star Meryl Streep saw him on Broadway and suggested to the director that he get the role.

Xmas or Bust: The Untold Story of 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation'

By Rob LeDonne | December 22, 2014

It started as a continuation of the misadventures of the Griswold family; it ended up becoming one of the most surprisingly popular and oft-quoted holiday movies of all time. This month marks the 25th anniversary of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, in which beleaguered patriarch Clark Griswold played by the inimitable Chevy Chase tries to engineer the picture-perfect seasonal festivities: the best naturally procured tree, the biggest and brightest (literally) Christmas-light display on the block, the end-of-the-year bonus from his Scrooge-like boss. It's the only comedy to appeal to those who live for that deck-the-halls spirit, viewers who are dyed-in-the-wool Grinches ("Well, I don't know what to say, except it's Christmas and we're all in misery") and folks who appreciate the genius of Randy Quaid in his underwear, exclaiming "s*****r's full!"

In honor of the film's quarter-of-a-century milestone, we've asked the cast and creators to weigh in on the seasonal classic. From the intricate planning behind the films zany antics to freak snowstorms and cast freak-outs, this is the untold, no-holds-barred story of Christmas Vacation.

The movie was based on John Hughes short story, Christmas 59, which was published in National Lampoon magazine in December 1980.

A Child Is Born...Matty Simmons (Executive Producer): The first Vacation movie was based on a short story in National Lampoon; the magazine was so hot at the time thanks to Animal House. There was also a Christmas story in the magazine by John [Hughes], and after reading it, I'd always wanted to make a movie of it. We made [the 1985 sequel] European Vacation and, after several years of pitching Warner Brothers, they finally said they wanted to do the Christmas one. They said, "John wants to produce and he wants first billing, will you take second billing?" So, I said "Okay, I'll take executive producer." That's my title on the picture.

Tom Jacobson (Producer): I was a partner with John at the time, producing movies like Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Uncle Buck with him. When the idea of a third Vacation came up, we went to Warners.

Simmons: Everything John wrote was just great. He was a genius, there's no question about that.

Chevy Chase (Clark Griswold): I never knew John that well. If you see his films, he had a great vision of teenagers growing up; in a way he was a teenager, still battling those awkward growing years. Maybe he was a genius, and G*d bless him if he was. There's so few of us.

Beverly D'Angelo (Ellen Griswold): I was living in Ireland and my agent Rick Nicita said, "John's got a script."

Jeremiah Chechik (Director): This was my first feature film up until then, I had done a lot of sexy, very moody, atmospheric commercials. Long story short, thanks to the commercial work I was going to make a movie about the Apollo Theater at Warner Brothers and had gotten to know them. They started to send me scripts and one of them sent me was Christmas Vacation. I laughed out loud when I read it. Never mind that I didn't have any comic chops, as far as I knew. I said I would do it, and met with John, Chevy, and Tom.

Jacobson: John was shooting Uncle Buck at the time [in 1989]. We overlapped prep, but Warner Brothers wanted Christmas Vacation in time for Christmas, so we started shooting it three days after we wrapped Buck.

Chechik: I thought, should I really be doing this?

D'Angelo: I remember on one of the first days Jeremiah saying, "We're going to figure out how your characters walk" and I was like, "What? This is Christmas Vacation." That'd be great if we were doing La Strada or something.

Chechik: John was at the height of his fame, popularity, and power, so for me it was so great to develop a strong relationship with him. He came to the set exactly one day on the first day of shooting. He was very much like, "It's your movie, man. You do it."

Simmons: Casting was pretty simple because the whole thing is built around Chevy and Beverly. The rest of the cast was just about getting the top character actors for the older people.

Chase: I think we had the best actors of our time: E.G. Marshall, John Randolph, Doris Roberts, and Diane Ladd. That's quite a group.

Diane Ladd (Norah Griswold): So you're writing about the picture that gives me more money than anything I've ever done? Every year around this time, I get my own bonus thanks to Christmas Vacation. Isn't that funny?

Juliette Lewis (Audrey Griswold): My first memory of the movie is being in one of those really generic office spaces with Chevy reading lines from the movie and him seeming excited. The fact that the Griswolds have a new set of kids each time became the thing. Your agents couldn't explain why it was acceptable; it just is. Of course, I grew up with the Vacation movie with the legendary Anthony Michael Hall. This was this huge exciting opportunity and even at 15, I knew it was a big deal.

Johnny Galecki (Rusty Griswold): At the time, I was in Chicago auditioning for industrial films and regional theater, and I was happy doing that. I didn't dare to dream to be in a big studio film. But I put myself on tape and sent it in. They flew me out to Los Angeles; it was one of the first times I was ever here. I read with Chevy and Jeremiah and that alone would have been enough for me. I could have been given my walking papers and sent home on the next flight and it still would have been a dream come true. Chevy told me right there in the room that I had gotten the role.

Lewis: I don't know the politics at the time, but maybe they had to rush to find the kids, or something.

Chechik: Galecki was just an odd kid. He was very young and so dry. He made me laugh because he has this wack of a sense of humor and that's what made me really want him. He wasn't a Hollywood kid who was going for laughs, but he had a nervousness to him that in many ways shows beautifully now as an adult. His comic gifts are absolutely incredible.

Ladd: This movie is kind of a turning point in my life. I went there with a British Academy Award and an Oscar nomination under my belt, but Hollywood was very hard on women. When I did Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, I thought it'd change everything for women a lot of us did. But it didn't, and I was spending a lot of time in Florida. People would yell at me, "What are you doing running away from Hollywood?" I came back to Hollywood and the first thing I got was for Christmas Vacation. Meanwhile, here I am going to audition to play Chevy's momma, and I'm one year older than him! That's if he was born in 1943, because IMDb lies about everything. They never get it right!

Miriam Flynn (Catherine): I remember getting together to read the script. Randy (Quaid) and I, our characters almost had their own little world, so I knew it was going to be fun.

Ladd: Shelly Winters loaned me her dead mother's dress to wear, I got some Oxfords and an pair of glasses at the Salvation Army, and I put baby powder in my hair. Here I am looking like an old dog and I thought that if I'm ever up for a sexy part again, I'd be dead. But I marched right over to Chevy and I grabbed his face, pulled open his mouth and played a game: "Knock-knock, who's there?" That was improvised and something like it wound up in the movie. When I got the call that I had the part, I started to cry. I said, "Oh my G*d, my career is over!" But I laughed myself for the bank for 16 weeks. That part paid money.

Chechik: Everyone in the cast had different qualities, but they shared soulful natures and a strong sense of quirkiness. At the end of the day, my focus was to try to get these great dramatic actors to trust John's script and allow the humor to come out of circumstances.

'Tis the Season...Simmons: It was entirely shot on the Warner Brothers lot in Burbank and in Colorado, but it has a very Chicago look.

Chase: The house we used is on the back lot at Warner Brothers. It was the same house where they shot Lethal Weapon. The toilet that blew up with Danny Glover was actually lying out on the lawn when we arrived there, waiting for the next crew to come in.

Flynn: It was such an interesting world we were in, because we were shooting it in the spring and summer, but they created that whole winter scene on the set. There we all were in our outfits in the middle of warm weather doing this Christmas movie.

Chechik: We went away for 10 days to Breckenridge, Colorado because at that time of year they traditionally had the biggest snowfall. We show up and there is no snow. We are freaking out day after day, so we set up a convoy of trucks to haul in snow to Breckenridge for those first scenes in the movie. There were a lot of logistical issues and just as these trucks were rolling up, it finally started to snow and continuedand continued. It snowed something like 10 feet in three days. It became near impossible to actually shoot because there was so much snow.

Chase: Well, there was enough snow on that hill to put me in a f*****g sled that sped down going about 100 miles an hour. Jesus Christ! It scared the living daylights out of me. I wasn't that far from the trees and the pathway in the snow had already been made, but it was a b***h. I kept on going faster and faster. [Laughs] I guess it didn't occur to them to put brakes. My heels were red by the end of it.

Galecki: Breckenridge was at an altitude none of us were used to, so we were panting while tying our shoes. It was cold even for a Chicago city kid up there, but that bonds the cast and crew real fast because it's like, no matter what my face hurts too. We're in this together.

Lewis: That first trip to Colorado, I took my boyfriend and caught him in our hotel room talking to another girl on the phone. I didn't even tell him that I heard him, I just asked who he was talking to. He lied and I said, "Oh, by the way. Youre leaving tomorrow morning." I booked his flight and then he left, and then I went to go film.

Ellen Latzen (Ruby Sue): I remember filming the sledding scene in Breckenridge and it was brutally cold. They had a crazy snowstorm and we had a hard time landing on the ground. We had to ride snowcats to get to the top of this mountain. The takes were kind of brutal because of the cold. I remember at the end of the scene, Randy Quaid's line "Bingo" was totally improvised. Jeremiah Chechik said, "That was amazing, say that again!"

Lewis: I remember being freezing in a tent that had a tiny heater. We tried to bide our time getting a tiny bit of warmth. The first scene we shot is when we were on a hill and I say, "My eyebrows are frozen."

D'Angelo: Juliette was just coming into this incredible charisma and appeal. She was like a ripening peach. Just amazing. She could say, "Who's at the door?" and it'd be compelling.

Chase: I thought Juliette's performance was brilliant, frankly. Her character was bored the whole f*****g time, which is what a teenage kid would be. It's the stage where they're thinking, "Well, I'm better than this." She was wonderful.

Galecki: Juliette was older than me by a year, but she might as well been on another planet. I worshipped her. She was rock and roll even at 15 years old. She had different stories about what she had done the night before and with whom. At that time I was, and still am, in awe of her. It was no surprise that within two years she was up for an Oscar. Nobody questioned that there was something boiling in that girl that was going to come out at some point.

Lewis: Johnny was the littlest thing back then. He was really curious, thoughtful, smart and funny.

D'Angelo: I remember feeling so maternal towards Johnny. Chevy and I would sing a song to him, "Oh, Johnny Galecki was a big, big man!"

Galecki: I hadn't thought of that in ages! I remember Beverly invited me into her trailer and we called Anthony Michael Hall, which was weird for me, because I didn't know how he'd feel and I was a fan. We talked on speakerphone for a while. Everyone there was really protective of me as much as they could be.

I'm Chevy Chase, and You're NotChechik: Both Chevy and Johnny have the gift of comic timing without the gloss of it. There was an odd flatness to it that was super funny.

Galecki: One day John Hughes, Jeremiah, Chevy and I were sitting around waiting for a scene to be set up, and Chevy said, "There's always been kind of a man-to-man scene between Clark and Russ in the previous films a coming-of-age scene. But there isn't in this one." John mentioned that he had something like that in an initial draft, and Chevy said, "We should consider putting that back in." So they asked what I thought and I said, "I don't think there's any point. Somebody thought it was worth taking out at some point, so even if we shoot it, it'll probably get taken out again." I literally talked myself out of what could have been a classic scene with Chevy Chase. Now that I'm a jaded Hollywood f**k, I realize the error of my ways. I still kick myself in the a*s for this everyday.

Chase: Now Galecki's making 100 million a year and I'm sitting here.

Galecki: Chevy worked like a puppet master for me in some scenes since I was was young and had never done comedy before. He'd almost cue me for my timing. He would nod, point, or wave a finger. He was so supportive, teaching me comic timing. That took a patience and consideration because the movie would have been funny enough without Rusty having that specific timing. He was terribly generous with me.

Latzen: At one point between takes, Chevy turns and looks at me and says in a very dry way, "Hey Ellen, why do dogs lick their b***s?" And I said, "I don't know." He said, "Because they can." As a kid I didn't get it, but as an adult I can totally appreciate the humor of it. With us kids, he was great. That was his way. He was very dry.

Doris Roberts (Frances Smith): On television, Chevy was always falling down on people, so during filming he started to do that with me and I squealed. The crew laughed and he said, "Fire this woman!" He was just kidding.

Chase: d**n, I had some great moves. I still have them, I'm just not using them at home a lot.

Well, there was enough snow on that hill to put me in a f*****g sled that sped down going about 100 miles an hour. Jesus Christ!

Jacobson: Chevy was a hard worker, incredibly committed, and wanted the movie to be great. That's the key. He'd always give you a ton of stuff, even little things. Like him in the office talking to his boss, he'll give you 20 different things a look, a stumble, a different entrance, a pause.

Galecki: Chevy would take me at lunch hours to the set of Harlem Nights and Ghostbusters 2. He didn't need to do that, yet here I am as a 13 year-old right off the bus from Chicago and I'm hanging out with Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Harold Ramis, and Dan Aykroyd. That's a dream.

Ladd: Chevy's been a really terrific human being to me. He's a born talent and the universe gave him wonderful comedy timing and he's a hard, hard worker. Everybody's different depending on how they affect you, but he played my son and right away I felt like he was my own flesh and blood. When he didn't get his bonus, I actually cried. "How could they do that to my son?!?"

Jacobson: Theres a scene in the front hallway of the house when Aunt Bethany, played by Mae Questel, wraps up her cat in a box. If you remember the scene, the cat's supposed to be jumping around in the box and Chevy is holding it by the twine. Clearly we didn't put a cat in the box when we were shooting it, but on the screen youre convinced theres a cat in there from the way the box is twitching and he's reacting to it. That's just a real sensibility for physical comedy.

Chase: You can see the box moving in the film, but you can't see me doing it. That's the way cats are. They make sudden, surprise movements.

D'Angelo: Whatever it was that happened with Chevy and I when we first met has never changed. We just have always had some kind of connection, physically and creatively. It's a current you just cant stop.

Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo in 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.' (Photo: Everett)

Chase: Bev and I have been close friends since the very first Vacation. She's very close to my wife and me. We even live near each other in Los Angeles. She's one of the best actresses in the world. I've always felt that way.

Lewis: Chevy and Beverly's chemistry... everyone on set could really feel it.

Chechik: During the filming, Beverly and I really fought like h**l. But when we did the DVD commentary several years ago, we had the greatest time together ever. Who knows how this all works?

D'Angelo: There was nothing that would qualify me as a suburban housewife. That wasn't me. But my mother was devoted to her family and husband, and her motto was "It has to all add up to 100 percent. So it doesn't matter if you give 99, just as long as it adds up to 100." And that was the source for me.

Flynn: Randy and I always said that all you have to do is put those clothes on us and we were ready to go. Once I remember the costume person said to me, "Randy thinks it'd be funny to have his underwear show through his white pants. What if you did that too?" And I went, "Um, no. That will be just Randy."

Chase: I loved working with Randy on all of the Vacation movies. I never even got a hint there was anything going on emotionally or physiologically with him. He just gets right into it. When we're in the grocery store and he gets that huge 100 pound bag of dog food and slams it down. I don't think anybody wrote that. That was just Randy reaching out and grabbing it.

Flynn: There's one scene that didn't make it to the film and I so wish it had. It's a scene where Randy and I are in the infamous motor home and you get to see what our lives are like inside. That was a riot, but at the time it had to be cut.

D'Angelo: I remember there was a big discussion on whether Bill Hickey's cigar should be called a cigar or a stogie, because he says, "Get me my stogie." [Hickey played Uncle Lewis.] They weren't sure people would know what a stogie was, because research showed that our average audience was nine years old or something. I thought, "What!?"

Flynn: The turkey scene with it exploding has become somewhat classic. I always get comments whenever I go to buy a turkey around the holidays.

Chase: That dinner sequence was my baby. I remember working out the way it should go, with the camera going around the table filming everybody. Then the turkey, looking like that: "Here's the heart!" [Laughs] It's just wonderful, because it's not so outlandish. The story is about the possibility that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

Lewis: All of the gags in this film, and there's a lot of them, are all really laborious to shoot. They take hours, if not days.

Chechik: The studio was really against electrifying the cat. They really didn't want to do it. I would always go, "Well, check with John and see what he thinks." And then I'd called John immediately after said, "They're going to call you to try to get rid of the cat!" John protected me.

Jacobson: John was a master of describing comedy. Look at the intricacies of Ferris Bueller and Home Alone; the details of the action are all right there on the page. Even in this one when the squirrel jumps out of the Christmas tree, it's written in a very detailed way that you can see it on the page.

Chechik: For the dog and squirrel chase, we hired an animal trainer who trained them everyday for months to run through the set. When it came time to finally shoot what we've been planning, I got out of my car and saw everyone standing in a huddle shaking their heads and I knew something was terribly wrong. I asked them what was going on and they said, "We have a problem." Okay, what? "The squirrel's dead." I said, "Holy f**k, we're shooting that today!" And the animal trainer turned and said, "Ya know, they don't live that long." We still had to shoot the scene, so we used an untrained squirrel. It was just total chaos.

Lewis: We probably shot the stuff with the squirrel for a week. That's the magic of moviemaking.

Ladd: I did my own stunt for the scene when the squirrel jumps from tree. I was in pretty good shape, so I jumped up and backwards onto the couch all by myself. Then, I'm supposed to pass out on the floor and the squirrel runs past me. And the director said, "Diane, please get closer to the squirrel!" Meanwhile, the squirrel wrangler was saying, "Diane, please don't get closer to the squirrel. If someone screams or scares one, their claws are like razor blades."

D'Angelo: Did you catch when the police came in and there's a freeze frame where my hand was (on Chevy's crotch)? I did that spur of the moment and told Chevy, just to see if anyone on set noticed. But we did a couple takes and no one mentioned it.

Chechik: I always wanted the animated opening you see in the film, but Warners balked at the cost of doing an animated title. So rather than get into a fight, I designed another title sequence with a Christmas song sung by a Jamaican who sounded like he had no teeth and you can barely understand the words. Then the replacement title sequence looked like an old French art film, with white titles on black. When I proposed this to Warner they said, "We think the animated titles are great." For the theme song, Prince was a Warner artist and he produced it. He's the one who brought in Darlene Love.

Simmons: There's a scene in the movie that when I saw it, it just knocked me out when Chevy goes up into the attic and watches the home movies. I just went crazy over that and I remember telling everybody that scene was our home run.

Chechik: I remember when I showed John the first cut of the movie. It was just him and I, and he turned to me and said, "You've got such a great movie here, I don't want to tell you anything." The day the movie opened, I was home that weekend and James Brooks the James L. Brooks, who was a friend of Chevy's and somewhat of a mentor to me called and said, "We're going to see your movie in Westwood. You gotta check it out with an audience!" So I sat with him and experienced the movie for the first time with a crowd. It was one of the greatest moments of my life.

Galecki: I remember at the after party for the premiere, I had sushi for the first time and Juliette was on the dance floor tearing it up. I said, "How did you learn to dance like that?" And she said, "Someone taught me last week." It was the choreographer for In Living Color or something.

Flynn: The first time I saw the movie I really, really loved it. I was at a party at Marty Short's house and it was right after it came out. Chevy walked in and, somewhat surprised, said, "We're number one at the box office."

Chechik: It was number one for like four weeks.

D'Angelo: I think that there was a little phenomenon with it where it was the third movie in the series, but it made more than the second one. Which is unusual. I didn't know that was going to happen. The first Vacation was rated R, but then this phenomena happened that people brought their kids and instead of saying, "Look at these people," the audience went, "This is us." They laughed with them instead of at them. And it changed things.

Permanent VacationJacobson: Frankly, it's hard to avoid seeing it on television this time of year.

Chase: I don't watch it if it's on TV, but just recently, my wife Jane was showing me some clips of it on her computer. I started realizing, hey that was really funny! It bucked me up. Do you know what my favorite line is? "Have you checked our s******s, honey?"

Galecki: This was such a seminal part of my career, and understanding of comedy and life in general. I remember practically every day.

Flynn: I always know when it's getting to be around November and December because people start coming up to me asking, "Did we go to school together or something?" The movie has seeped into people's consciousness.

Latzen: I haven't acted since I was a kid but my face is still the same, so I'll be walking down the street and people will say, "Where do I know you from?" Everyone once in awhile I get, "Oh man, you're Ruby Sue!"

Galecki: What's even funnier is that people that I've known for 10, 15 years still to this day say to me, "Oh my G*d, you're in Christmas Vacation?" There's a big difference between 14 and 39. I'm able to look at it with very grateful eyes.

Simmons: I would say 1,000 people tell me that they watch it every Christmas. I'm not exaggerating. If I go anywhere and they know who I am, people come up to me and say that.

Lewis: I haven't seen the movie in 20 years, but I do get to relive aspects of it by other people talking to me about it and I just adore that. I love that I'm part of a Christmas classic. As a youngster, you don't think past that week. Now, as 40 year-old Juliette, I think back and say to myself, "I was a Griswold. How cute."

Simmons: Until Christmas Vacation came out, I considered A Christmas Story the best Christmas movie. But now I think Christmas Vacation is better.

Chase: Comparing Christmas Vacation to It's A Wonderful Life is the silliest thing. That film starred the greatest movie actor of all time and the idea that our movie could ever be connected in some fashion to something so brilliant and beautiful always made feel like, "That's all they had to write about?" It's very flattering and I suppose Christmas Vacation is a modern look at Christmas. But James Stewart, my G*d! What a movie. I could talk about that one all day. Frank Capra's grandson was a second Assistant Director on Christmas Vacation.

Flynn: There are certain things that become part of the lexicon. Now whenever a house has a lot of lights, it's called a "Griswold house."

Chase:There are those contests now, with people trying to light their houses. I'm thinking, "I did that. I fell off a roof."

Lewis: It highlights the idiosyncrasies between family members. You can call be totally different and oddballs, but everyone tries to make a go of it during the holiday season.

Chase:The little moments are my favorite. When Cousin Eddie's dog goes under the tree and drinks the water, and Clark says "Stop that!" And Randy, as Cousin Eddie, says, "Don't worry, a little tree water wont hurt him." Not at all concerned that I have to get under there and refill the water.

Roberts: This movie's going to last much longer than all of us, but unfortunately ghosts don't get residuals.

Ladd: Last year I had to go buy 20 copies of the DVD to give out for Christmas. I meet new people and they say, "Oh my G*d, my kids watch you every Christmas!" So I send them an autographed copy of the movie and they jump up and down.

Chase: I have to see it again.

Merry Christmas from the Worlds Best Directors

'The Auteurs of Christmas 2' shows us the holidays as directed by Chaplin, Tarantino and more.

In what looks to be the start of a holiday tradition, Fourgrounds Film has unveiled a follow-up to their 2013 holiday viral hit The Auteurs of Christmas. In their latest, they show us what Christmas morning would look like if more of the worlds best and most recognizable filmmakers were in charge of directing.

A Tarantino Christmas includes guns, dancing, and slicing Santas ear off. Michael Bays Christmas ends in explosions. And of course, a Godard Christmas is very, very French.

With only a handful of great directors between the two videos, Fourgrounds can keep this going for years. One can only hope theyre coordinating a horde of samurai on horseback for a Kurosawa Christmas next year.

Blackhawks win one for Clint Reif, race past Maple Leafs

It was an emotional night for the Blackhawks, who received word of the passing of their assistant equipment manager prior to their game against Toronto. They went out an honored him in the best way they could.

The Chicago Blackhawks were hit with some pretty devastating news heading into their Sunday evening tilt with the Toronto Maple Leafs, as word came down that assistant equipment manager Clint Reif had passed away. We saw Joel Quenneville shaken up before the game, and saw Troy Parchman break down on the bench following the game. The Hawks donned a 'CR' on the backs of their helmets in his honor. Those are just just two examples of overwhelming emotions in a Hawks' locker room that is sure to be full of them tonight.

The Hawks came out and put on a performance that Clint would have been proud of. They dictated the better part of 60 minutes against a Maple Leafs club that has been wildly inconsistent throughout the year, except in the regard that they consistently allow opposing teams to pepper their goaltender with shots. James Reimer allowed four goals, but did the best he could with what he had to work with, as the Blackhawks fired 34 shots on goal.

On the other end, the Hawks received another strong showing from Antti Raanta, who I talked about yesterday and noted his improvement. He held the Leafs scoreless for the night, stopping all 31 shots he faced. This one didn't require a ton of physical effort on the part of the Hawks, but they were able to overcome the tremendous emotional hurdle that came with the passing of such an integral member of the staff.

The Hawks opened the scoring in the first period on a laser from the point off the stick of David Rundblad. That's not a typo, I promise. Rundblad received an opportunity with Tim Erixon a healthy scratch coming off of a rough showing in Columbus, and actually fared quite well. He had the goal, four shots, and logged some time on the power play. Not a bad showing for him. We'll see if it leads to any semblance of consistent playing time.

Once Rundblad got the Hawks on the board, the stars took over the game. At the tail end of the opening frame, Patrick Kane left a beautiful feed to Kris Versteeg in front of the net, with Versteeg laying a sweet deke on Cody Franson and wristing it to the left of Reimer. Everything about the sequence was fantastic.

The Blackhawks went through the second in ceding a bit of momentum to Toronto, but they were unable to cash in. Instead, Kane helped the Hawks to pull away on the power play in the third period, finding a loose puck and putting it past Reimer. Jonathan Toews completely sealed the deal, with an outstanding show of strength in muscling Jake Gardiner off the puck and putting one past Reimer. Patrick Sharp added a trio of helpers in the win.

Overall, a solid showing for the Blackhawks and an incredible show of mental toughness. The Hawks went out and did exactly what they needed to, with emotions so heavy throughout the building. They closed things out with a salute to Clint after the final horn sounded.

Three Stars of the Game3. Patrick Sharp

With Brad Richards a late scratch from the lineup due to injury, Sharp stepped in a second line center role that he hasn't assumed consistently in about four years. He fared quite well in winning 57 percent of his draws, though it's important to note that he only took seven, and added three assists to the effort. He's jumped right back into the mix since his return from injury and hasn't really missed a beat. It was nice to see some of that versatility come into play on Sunday night, even if it was the result of Joel Quenneville's hand being forced more than anything.

2. Antti Raanta

Raanta was back in action on Sunday, after taking Saturday off thanks to the return of Corey Crawford. He continues to show that he's much more capable of spelling Crawford than he was last season. He lucked out on a couple of different sequences in which Phil Kessel had open looks, but missed the net. He continues to look calm and composed between the pipes, and is a far cry from the flailing Raanta we saw throughout much of last year. He stopped all 31 shots to earn his second shutout of the year.

1. Patrick Kane

Showtime is on an absolute roll for the Blackhawks right now, and may be as hot as any individual player in the league. He notched his 19th and 20th assist of the year, before adding his 16th goal of the season in the third period. He's on pace to eclipse his career high of 88 points if he can continue at anything resembling this pace. He's been magical with Kris Versteeg opposite him on that second line, and that continued with Patrick Sharp in there on the second line.
