For an Alicia Keys Video, Choreographing Spontaneity

Alicia Keys - Girl On Fire

How do you plan a spontaneous-looking dance party? That was one task facing the choreographer Celia Rowlson-Hall on the Brooklyn set of the music video for In Common, the nonchalantly danceable new single from Alicia Keys. Directed by Pierre Debusschere in high-definition black and white, the video features about a dozen dancers for whom the term backup doesnt apply. They are front and center.

As Ms. Keys sings from her perch on a free-standing fire escape, intimate duets, seductive solos and euphoric jam sessions unfold on an abstracted city street below. Two wiry men Khalil Williams and Xavier D, who excel in the contortionist street-dance style called bone-breaking twist their arms behind their backs, reaching for each others hands. The formidable Niv Acosta, best known in the New York downtown dance and theater scene, floats toward the camera, vogueing with a sultry stare.

If you could love somebody like me, you must be messed up, too, Ms. Keys sings, taking comfort in shared imperfections. For their own bodies and for one another, the dancers seem to feel unconditional love.

Ms. Rowlson-Hall, who also directs her own music videos and movement-based films, jokes about being a glorified cheerleader on the set. But rising to a directors call for beautiful lines and the illusion of spontaneity takes choreographic chops. In a recent phone interview, she spoke about casting choices, improvisational hugging and choreographing to a song without the song. These are edited excerpts from that conversation.

What kind of direction did you get from the creative team?

They wanted the video to be diverse and super relatable. They wanted dance, but not, you know, 5-6-7-8 and everyone goes into a routine more of an improvised feeling. One of the big things was casting. They were talking to various choreographers, and when I gave my two cents about people I wanted to pull into the mix, like Niv and X[avier], I think Pierre was very interested in that.

What were you looking for in the casting process?

We didnt want just one style or look or gender. We were looking for great dancers with great looks that you dont see every day. The people we chose have a lot going on [in their careers], and I think thats why they stood out in the audition, because theyre not just waiting to be formed into the directors idea. Their attitude is more: Heres what I do. What do you think of it?

What was the concept for the choreography?

With Pierres images in general, theres a lot of negative space, and its all about line. He wanted beautiful lines. For the duets, I worked with specific points of embrace and breaking out of those to find new points of embrace. So, finding your chin resting on your partners lower rib, and how to get into that position naturally something more than a standard hug. With Stephanie [Crousillat] and Pierce [Cady], I gave them an opening moment, then directed their movement as they improvised. With Khalil and X, I had them do their bone crushing while staying connected the whole time. They had never done that before.

What about the group sections?

I gave each person a starting point and then asked different people to play with levels [like reaching up or crouching down]. So they were doing their own thing, but the space wasnt blocked with everyone dancing at midlevel. Somebody was always moving to another point, and somebody was always high and low.

Youre also a director. Is it ever challenging to choreograph and not direct?

Not at all. Because I do both, Im actually overly sensitive in never wanting to step over the boundaries. But I do give, through my choreography, things I know Id want, like points for cutting in and out of movement, because I know how to cut dance. So Im secretly infusing my choreography with what Id do as a director.

Did you choreograph to the music? Did the lyrics influence you?

Even as a choreographer, I wasnt given the song. I listened to it in a meeting, and that was it. She [Alicia Keys] performed it on the set, but because we were shooting at 48 frames per second, she had to sing twice as fast as the actual tempo. I only really listened to the lyrics a few days ago, and I was like, Wait, this is what she was saying the whole time?

Real Madrid fans massacred in Iraq

Real Madrid – Atletico Madrid Champions League final highlights, review match 28 05 2016

A suicide attacker targeting a cafe popular with sports fans killed at least seven people on Sunday, Iraqi police said.

Young fans had assembled in a cafe in Moqdadiyah, northeast of Baghdad, to celebrate the victory of Real Madrid over rival Atletico Madrid in the Champions League football final.

This is the second attack targeting soccer fans in recent weeks. Some 16 Real Madrid fans were killed two weeks ago after their supporters" club in the town of Balad was targeted by suspected militants from the so-called "Islamic State" (IS) group.

Real Madrid"s president Florentino Perez dedicated the club"s 11th Champions success to the slain fans and their families.

"Last night"s triumph is dedicated to the victims of the massacres in Iraq," Perez said. "Football should always be an area of tolerance, not of violence."

Second deadly attack in two weeks

Real Madrid supporters in Balad celebrate their team"s victory in the Champions League on May 28, two weeks after their fan club was hit by a deadly attack

A social media account carried a statement by IS claiming responsibility for the attack.

The deadly bombing was carried out despite the attacker"s mother alerting authorities of her son"s dark motives and the man"s picture posted at checkpoints around town, according to the Iraqi interior ministry.

Moqdadiyah is in the religiously and ethnically mixed province of Diyala, which the government declared free of IS early last year. But suicide and car bomb blasts have been carried out in the region since.

Meanwhile, elite Iraqi troops and Kurdish peshmerga say they are poised to assault Fallujah, an IS stronghold, as the jihadists launch separate attacks elsewhere in Iraq and neighboring Syria.

Fighting has prompted a new exodus of thousands of desperate civilians and deep concern for the many more trapped in the battlegrounds.

The week-old operation has so far focused on retaking villages and rural areas around Fallujah, which lies just 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of Baghdad.

Rio Ferdinand"s free-to-air bow tie and BT Sport"s Champions League Final

PES 2016 Real Madrid vs Atletico de Madrid UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL (La Previa - Opinion)

An unusual experience for TV viewers this Saturday: premium European football available to view for free, and not an Andy Townsend in sight.

BT Sport opened it up to the floor, as it were, showing the Real Madrid vs Atltico Madrid Champions League Final on its Sport Showcase freeview channel, as well as streaming the game on You Tube for all.

Naturally, BT Sport was not doing this as a charity outreach or a display of munificence, although they might conceivably have felt that Rio Ferdinands bow tie deserved the widest possible audience they could give it. Instead, it was part of the deal with which they acquired the rights to the competition. They had done the same for Liverpools Europa League Consolation Plate Final but, well, thats not quite the same thing, is it?

Dodgers" Chase Utley: Plates four in Friday loss to Mets

Syndergaard Ejected Throwing at Chase Utley Syndergaard Ejected for Throwing Behind Chase Utley

Utley went 1-for-2 with a double, four RBI and a walk in Friday"s 6-5 loss to the Mets.

The veteran managed to maximize his RBI opportunities Friday, plating Yasiel Puig in the third with a sacrifice fly, and then clearing the bases with a game-tying double in the ninth that brought home Puig, Howie Kendrick and Yasmani Grandal. The performance extended his modest hitting streak to four games, while also marking the ninth time in 10 games that Utley has reached safely.

Cavs pay respects to departed "Game of Thrones" character

Cleveland Cavaliers vs Toronto Raptors - Game 6 - 1st Half Highlights | May 27, 2016 | NBA Playoffs

Thanks to finishing their series against the Toronto Raptors in six games, the Cleveland Cavaliers are free to do whatever they"d like on Sunday night -- including watch the hit HBO series "Game of Thrones." From the looks of Cavs forward Kevin Love"s Instagram account, they"ll be doing just that, while mourning the absence of a particular character.

Spoiler alert if you"re a few episodes behind in Season 6...

Love and Iman Shumpert aren"t the only "Game of Thrones" fans on the team. Channing Frye watches the show regularly and even listed Hodor as his favorite character. However, according to Toronto-based writer Alex Wong, Frye had the Hodor revelation spoiled for him by a combination of the Internet (via the ubiquitous "Crying Jordan" meme) and Love himself.

Avoiding spoilers could become a problem for the Cavaliers as they move into the NBA Finals. Next week"s episode airs the same time as Game 2, and a potential Game 7 would take place at the same time as the ninth episode -- historically the most pivotal episode in a "Game of Thrones" season.
