Yasiel Puig goes crazy celebrating Monica Puig"s historic gold medal

Though being demoted to Triple A wasnt an ideal scenario for Yasiel Puig, it has afforded him opportunitieshe may not have otherwise had.

For example, Puig spent some time bonding with his new teammates at Oklahoma City this week by hunting Pokemon. Could you imagine Puig chasing Pokemon around Los Angeles? Highly unlikely, as were sure his schedule was typically full.

Heres another big advantage. While the Dodgers were playing an afternoon game on Saturday, Puig was free to watch the Olympics and cheer on his favorite tennis player, Monica Puig.

No, the two are not related, but sharing a last name can still create a bond or at least stir some emotions.Thats especially true given the historic overtones of Monica Puigs match in Rio. The 22-year-old tennis star was attempting to become the first-ever gold medalist in Puerto Ricos Olympic history when she squared off against Germanys Angelique Kerber.

How did she do?

Well let Yasiel Puig tell the story.

Go crazy, Yasiel! Go crazy.

Puig won match in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. The victory is considered a pretty big upset in the tennis ranks asPuig entered the match 34th in the world, while Kerber came in at No. 2. Youd never know that though based on Puig running away in the third set. Puig won the first five games of the third set before clinching the match.

From there, the celebration was on, with the Cuban Yasiel Puig leading the charge from Oklahoma Citys clubhouse. Monica Puig probably couldnt feel his support, but shell soon be uplifted by an entire country thats proud of her historic accomplishment.

Tennis player Monica Puig wins historic gold for Puerto Rico

¡Felicidades Mónica Puig! - Campeona Tennis Rio 2016

Olympic gold-medal history was crafted for Puerto Rico by a 22-year-old tennis player, who was born in San Juan and moved to Miami as an infant.

Monica Puig, who had never been past the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament, won the first-ever gold medal for Puerto Rico, defeating Angelique Kerber of Germany, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, in the womens singles final. Puerto Rico, a territory of the U.S., has fielded teams in the Summer Olympics since 1948, and this was the first medal, of any variety, for a woman representing Puerto Rico.

There was joy and disbelief for Puig.

She dissolved in tears with her shoulders shaking as she knelt on the court, taking in the moment after a tense two-hour, nine-minute match.

Puig took out the No. 2-ranked Kerber with a barrage of hard-hitting groundstrokes and displayed a deft touch when required. She won it on her fourth match point when Kerber, who won the Australian Open in January, pushed a groundstroke just wide.

It was a nervy final game for both players. Kerber squandered six break points and Puig had three match points in it and watched one vanish when Kerber hit a net-cord winner.

Justin Rose wins Rio golf gold as Kiwis struggle | Sport | Newshub

Justin Rose"s Solid Golf Shots from 2015 Frys.com PGA Tour

Kiwis Danny Lee and Ryan Fox have finished well down the leaderboard as golf made its return to the Olympics after a 112-year absence.

Lee finish in a share of 27th, 14 shots behind winner Britain"s Justin Rose on 16-under.

Ryan Fox moved up to a share of 39th in the 59-man field after a three-under par final round of 68 left him at one-over for the tournament at Marapendi.

Lee had moved into contention after his second round 65 to lie sixth, but a five-over par third round, blighted by a quintuple bogey, sent him freefalling down the leaderboard.

He made up some ground on Sunday with a round of 69 to end on two-under.

Fox managed five birdies and two bogeys in his final round and said the Olympics had been a great experience.

"The Olympics have been fantastic. The tournament"s been fantastic. I wouldn"t have traded the experience for anything," he said.

Rose birdied the final hole to win by two shots from Sweden"s Henrik Stenson while Matt Kuchar"s final round 63 earned bronze for the American.

Armed suspect shot by Milwaukee police identified by father | Local ...

Black Lives Matter Burns Milwaukee

The armed suspect shot and killed by Milwaukee police Saturday has been identified by his father and the Milwaukee Police Association.

WISN 12 News spoke with the father, who was too upset to talk much, but confirmed it was his son who was shot.

VIDEO:Father of man shot, killed by police talks

Sylville Smith, 23, was shot near 44th Street and Auer Avenue following a traffic stop Saturday afternoon.

The Milwaukee Police Association also identified Smith as the suspect.

An officer, a 24-year-old man with six years of service with the department, shot Smith during a foot chase. He died at the scene, and Milwaukee police Capt. Mark Stanmeyer said the semiautomatic handgun with which Smith was armed was taken in a burglary in Waukesha in March of this year.

A man who knew Smith said he just felt like crying when he heard the news.

" I just hurry up and got over here and tried to get to his mother and different individuals like that, and we just kind of was at the front line, you know? The police were lined up, and there were hundreds of young men and women that were lined up, but they were angry, and it was just an upsetting thing, and I was upset. The police were upset. Everybody was just upset, real tension," Mario Dickens said.

Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn said Smith had a "lengthy arrest record."

Ryan Lochte and 3 teammates robbed at gunpoint in Rio

Ryan Lochte says he "needs a break" from swimming

Swimmer Ryan Lochte and three of his American teammates were robbed at gunpoint in Brazil early Sunday morning, the U.S. Olympic Committee said.

According to four members of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team (Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger, Jimmy Feigen and Ryan Lochte), they left France House early Sunday morning in a taxi headed for the Olympic Village, USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky said in a statement. Their taxi was stopped by individuals posing as armed police officers who demanded the athletes money and other personal belongings. All four athletes are safe and cooperating with authorities.

Lochte and Feigen both have lived in Charlotte and trained at SwimMAC Carolina during this Olympic cycle, and each won a gold medal in a relay at these Olympics. The event at France house was a birthday celebration that the swimmers were attending.

Lochte told NBCs Billy Bush, We got pulled over in our taxi and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge. No lights, no nothing, just a police badge. They pulled us over. They pulled out their guns.

The swimmers were ordered to get down on the ground, Lochte said. The others did but Lochte refused, he told NBC, and then one of the robbers pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and said, Get down, and I put my hands up. I was like whatever.

Lochte said the robbers took his wallet and the other swimmers cash, but left him with his Olympic credentials and cell phone.

Ileana Lochte, Ryans mother, told the Observer via text message on Sunday afternoon: Not really sure what happened but he is OK and really that is all I care about. The incident first received widespread attention when Ileana Lochte disclosed it to USA Today Sports.

American swimmer Michael Phelps said Sunday he wasnt at the party and was startled when he heard the news. I kind of said, Excuse me? I couldnt believe it, Phelps said, adding that he had been to Brazil many times and had felt safe every time Ive come here.

Lochte finished his Olympics last week, winning his 12th overall Olympic medal a gold in the 4x200 relay with the U.S. team but then placing fifth in his only individual event. It was his most unproductive Olympics ever.

After living and training in Charlotte the past three years, Lochte said Friday that he plans to move to the West Coast by September or October. He said he wanted to take some time off from swimming and eventually return to training again in preparation for a run at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, when he would be 36.

Lochte said his two most likely training sites after an extended vacation were California and Florida. He did not mention Charlotte in his future plans.
