Ryan Lochte and 3 teammates robbed at gunpoint in Rio

Ryan Lochte says he "needs a break" from swimming

Swimmer Ryan Lochte and three of his American teammates were robbed at gunpoint in Brazil early Sunday morning, the U.S. Olympic Committee said.

According to four members of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team (Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger, Jimmy Feigen and Ryan Lochte), they left France House early Sunday morning in a taxi headed for the Olympic Village, USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky said in a statement. Their taxi was stopped by individuals posing as armed police officers who demanded the athletes money and other personal belongings. All four athletes are safe and cooperating with authorities.

Lochte and Feigen both have lived in Charlotte and trained at SwimMAC Carolina during this Olympic cycle, and each won a gold medal in a relay at these Olympics. The event at France house was a birthday celebration that the swimmers were attending.

Lochte told NBCs Billy Bush, We got pulled over in our taxi and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge. No lights, no nothing, just a police badge. They pulled us over. They pulled out their guns.

The swimmers were ordered to get down on the ground, Lochte said. The others did but Lochte refused, he told NBC, and then one of the robbers pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and said, Get down, and I put my hands up. I was like whatever.

Lochte said the robbers took his wallet and the other swimmers cash, but left him with his Olympic credentials and cell phone.

Ileana Lochte, Ryans mother, told the Observer via text message on Sunday afternoon: Not really sure what happened but he is OK and really that is all I care about. The incident first received widespread attention when Ileana Lochte disclosed it to USA Today Sports.

American swimmer Michael Phelps said Sunday he wasnt at the party and was startled when he heard the news. I kind of said, Excuse me? I couldnt believe it, Phelps said, adding that he had been to Brazil many times and had felt safe every time Ive come here.

Lochte finished his Olympics last week, winning his 12th overall Olympic medal a gold in the 4x200 relay with the U.S. team but then placing fifth in his only individual event. It was his most unproductive Olympics ever.

After living and training in Charlotte the past three years, Lochte said Friday that he plans to move to the West Coast by September or October. He said he wanted to take some time off from swimming and eventually return to training again in preparation for a run at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, when he would be 36.

Lochte said his two most likely training sites after an extended vacation were California and Florida. He did not mention Charlotte in his future plans.

Criminal Minds actor Thomas Gibson sacked after "disagreement"

Thomas Gibson Fired From Criminal Minds

An actor on the long-running US drama Criminal Minds has been sacked after allegedly kicking a producer.

Thomas Gibson apologised over the incident, which occurred last month while he was directing an episode of the new season. He said in a statement on Thursday: There were creative differences on the set and a disagreement. I regret that it occurred.

On Friday ABC Studios and CBS Television Studios said Gibson had been dismissed. They said details on how his character would be written out of the show would be announced at a later date.

Gibson had played special agent Aaron Hotchner since the show began in 2005. He also directed six episodes in recent years. The show focuses on an elite team of FBI profilers who try to anticipate and prevent criminal behaviour.

Fans reacted with anger to the news, with some threatening to boycott the show, using the hashtag #NoHotchNoWatch.

Others made a direct appeal to producers on the official Criminal Minds Twitter account.

Gibson had been facing a two-episode suspension following the incident. His character was to have been written out for those episodes, and it is likely that the storyline will now turn into him being excluded permanently.

The actor said he loved the show and had put his heart and soul into it for the past 12 years. I had hoped to see it through to the end, but that wont be possible now. I would just like to say thank you to the writers, producers, actors, our amazing crew and, most importantly, the best fans that a show could ever hope to have, he said.

Gibson, 54, had previously starred in the sitcom Dharma and Greg and the hospital drama series Chicago Hope. The new Criminal Minds season begins in the US on 28 September.

Losing a shoe won"t keep Etenesh Diro from steeplechase final

Emma Coburn wins 3000m steeplechase final, clinches Rio bid

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) With one shoe on and one shoe off, Etenesh Diro raised a big cheer at the Olympics on Saturday with a gutsy finish in her 3,000-meters steeplechase heat.

Initially outside the qualifying places, the Ethiopian was rewarded following a protest by three teams, including her own with a place in Monday"s final.

This is what happened:

Diro was cruising along comfortably in the pack with a couple of laps to go when she got tangled up with some other competitors and her right shoe came half-off. For precious seconds, the Ethiopian athlete knelt on the track and tried to pull the shoe back on.

It just wouldn"t go and runner after runner passed her. Finally giving up on it, Diro ripped the shoe off completely and threw it away, took a few steps, then removed her right sock, too.

She ran the rest of the grueling race, the best part of three laps, with just one shoe on and her right foot bare, negotiating the barriers and the water jump, and overtaking a number of rivals as the crowd urged her on.

She finished seventh and fell to the track, exhausted and clutching her foot. She"d thought she"d missed out.

But following protests by the Ethiopia, Ireland and Jamaica teams, Diro, Ireland"s Sara Treacy and Jamaica"s Aisha Praught were advanced to the final.

Diro was clipped from behind, but her shoe issue also caused a pile up of runners behind her, with Praught taking a tumble because of it.

"I went down pretty hard. You brace because you don"t expect that," Praught said. "All I know is the girl in front of me stopped to put on her shoe. She stopped right in front of me. That"s when I fell ... You don"t expect that."

Praught said "brake lights" on the runners ahead of her would have been helpful.

As for her own shoes, Praught said: "I tie them very tightly."

Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson backtracks on blaming Obama for 2004 death of Humayun Khan

Katrina Pierson leaves Kate Snow "speechless"

Donald Trump campaign spokeswoman Katrina Pierson admitted her timeline was off when she suggested that President Obama and Hillary Clinton were somehow to blame for the death of U.S. Army Capt. Humayun Khan, who died in Iraq in 2004 when George W. Bush was commander in chief.

What I was talking about is Donald Trump has no connection with anything to do with Capt. Khan, Pierson said on CNNs New Day Wednesday morning. Hillary Clinton voted for the war in Iraq. She did not support the surge. Barack Obama made things worse by invading more countries than President Bush did.

Donald Trump wasnt there, she added. That was the only point. Donald Trump is being blamed for something he had nothing to do with.

During a discussion with CNNs Wolf Blitzer the night before, Pierson was asked if her boss had any plans to apologize to the Khan family for suggesting that Ghazala Khan, Humayuns grieving mother, was not allowed to speak at last weeks Democratic National Convention because she is Muslim.

What exactly is Mr. Trump supposed to be apologizing for? Pierson asked. It was under Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that changed the rules of engagements that probably cost his life.

The gaffe went viral overnight, as a hashtag (#KatrinaPiersonHistory) mocking her grasp of history began trending on Twitter.

Pierson even used the hashtag herself.

But it backfired.

The war of words between Trump and the Khans began at last weeks Democratic National Convention, where Khizr Khan delivered a stinging rebuke of Trump over his call for a ban on Muslims entering the United States a policy that would have prevented his son from serving in the U.S. military.

Donald Trump, youre asking Americans to trust you with their future, Khan said. Let me ask you: Have you even read the United States Constitution? I will gladly lend you my copy. Look for the words liberty and equal protection of law.

Khizr Khan said Piersons comments were another example of a lack of factual correctness among Trumps surrogates.

Please, show some decency, Khan said on CNN Tuesday following Pierson, a frequent guest on cable news.

On Wednesday, Pierson admitted she was absolutely wrong to assert Obama and Clintons actions cost Khan his life.

Thats why I used probably, she said. I was just going through the timeline. Because since then, we have had tens of thousands of soldiers that have been lost, 1 million wounded. Six trillion dollars later, how can we possibly put any of the onus on Donald Trump? Its absolutely absurd, and thats why you see so much confusion around this issue.

But no one was blaming Donald Trump for Captain Khans death, CNNs Alisyn Camerota said. You were blaming President Obama and he wasnt president yet.
