Review: 'The Lazarus Effect'

Feb. 28, 2015 | 0 Comments

REVIEW BY BURL BURLINGAME / Special to the Star-Advertiser

All of the actors here are perfectly capable folks, given the right material and direction. Here, they have neither, and if nothing else, The Lazarus Effect makes you acutely aware that actors can be victims too.

Its basic Frankenstein/Re-Animator/Flatliners/Mad Scientist shtick. A group of rather cute scientific researchers find a formula that can bring the recently dead back to life. They try it on a dead dog. Dog comes back back to life and acts weird. Actually, it acts like a cat. Then one of the scientists becomes recently dead herself and they try it out on a human, who then acts weird, but not in a good way.

The undead dog, behaving like a cat, absolutely disappears when things get weird. Good doggie.

The science stuff in the beginning unfolds rather well, even if the university lab theyre working in is underlit like a bargain-basement haunted house. What, the university cant afford light bulbs? Its when the action gets going with the undead human being that the film goes kerblooie. Theres more to horror films than black screens, flying furniture and boo! moments. They require imagination and verve, as well as a subversive sense of humor.

The undead scientist is played by lovely Olivia Wilde. At least I formerly thought she was lovely. She gets so many extreme close-ups that you feel like her dermatologist. She winds up looking like those outer-space pictures of dead moons. Gives one the creeps, like nothing else in the movie does. Poor Olivia.

The other actors, all of whom are seasoned pros, such as Mark Duplass, Evan Peters, Sarah Bolger and particularly Donald Glover, do science-yak one minute, scream the next minute, and are squished or zapped or burnt alive a minute later. (Interestingly, none are scared to death.) The entire Lazarus is only 83 minutes, and I want 80 of those minutes back.

Even the silliest of scare movies can have a sense of fun and danger, but The Lazarus Effect implodes only a third of the way in, and never recovers. Its better to let dead dogs lie.

In the end, the allegations against former University of Louisville basketball star Chris Jones were worse than anyone could have imagined.

Just hours after he led the team to a comeback victory over Miami and two days after being reinstated to the team he allegedly raped and sodomized one woman and, with two other men, did the same to another.

He pleaded not guilty Thursday and one of his lawyers, Scott C. c*x, predicted he will be found not guilty.

"We believe this gentleman is innocent and has been falsely accused," c*x told reporters, after Jefferson District Judge Sheila Collins released Jones on home incarceration, which he will begin serving in a hotel room.

A video recap of the news involving former UofL guard Chris Jones' rape and sodomy charges on Feb. 26. Video by Eric Burse.

But his arrest on such serious allegations both punishable by up to 20 years in prison rocked the community, including Cardinals fans who questioned on sports talk radio shows whether Jones should have been punished more harshly for his earlier infraction threatening a girlfriend in a text message for which he served a one-game suspension.

Grilling U of L officials at a news conference, reporters also asked if Jones should have been dismissed and expelled for that offense and whether that might have prevented the more serious charges.

Lt. Col. Kenny Brown of the U of L police scoffed at the suggestion, saying the incidents were "totally unrelated."

Dean of Students Michael Mardis said the university can remove a student from campus if they are deemed a threat to others, but he said that decision hinges on many factors, including the victim's wishes.

The "off and on" girlfriend who reported that Jones texted her Feb. 17 threatening to smack the "f" out of her after she ransacked his room told campus police she did not want him charged with a crime.

Mardis defended the university which he described as "dynamic and thriving" and its programs to combat sexual assault. He called the assault allegations "an incredibly unfortunate situation."

Coach Rick Pitino said later in the day, "We're all shocked, extremely disheartened and very saddened for everybody involved. Our prayers go out to every person involved in this."

Cardinals fans reacted with empathy toward the women and Jones.

Kathy Dobbins, a lifelong fan who has attended every home game this season, said: "The consequences of this on Chris' life and futureit's terribly sad. It's very distressing and upsetting. If he is guilty, I hope he gets the help he needs."

U of L law student Michael Farley said he was shocked by the allegations. "I can't imagine the pain the victims are going through," he said. "I feel bad for the team. It's also a shame that players like (Mon)Trezl (Harrell) and (Terry) Rozier have to have their phenomenal seasons clouded by this controversy."

The events that led to the stunning charges occurred between 2 and 4 a.m. Sunday in a room at Cardinal Towne, a privately owned but campus-affiliated complex that is home to about 850 students. The apartments, owned by American Campus Communities of Austin, Texas, are the same place where cheerleader Danielle Cogswell died of a drug overdose last July.

The company didn't immediately respond to requests about whether it will step up security in the complex.

Brown said the events unfolded at what he called a "get-together" and that one of the women was a U of L student and the other took classes online from Western Kentucky University. They are 19 and 20 years old.

He wouldn't say how they knew Jones, 23, although a police report describes them as his acquaintances.

According to a criminal complaint, Jones alone engaged in unwanted intercourse with the first woman and sodomized her. She was able to identify him because she recognized him as a basketball player and because he told her his name, the complaint says. She was treated later at University of Louisville Hospital, where a rape exam was performed.

Other complaints say that Jones and another man, Jalen D. Tilford, forced a second woman to engage in sexual intercourse and oral s*x, the latter leading to a sodomy charge. A third man, Tyvon Julah Walker, also was charged with raping her. The complaints say they were identified by the women through social media.

Brown wouldn't disclose how the defendants know each other. Court records show that Jones and Tilford have no prior criminal records while Walker was charged last year with shoplifting and placed in diversion.

Tilford and Walker were arrested and pleaded not guilty at their arraignments Thursday morning. Tilford is being held on a $100,000 bond and Walker on $75,000.

Brown said the incidents were reported to U of L police a few hours after they allegedly occurred, although he wouldn't say who made the reports because the investigation is "open and active."

The women were treated about 10:30 a.m. Sunday and Jones was dismissed from the basketball team shortly after noon that day, based on reports that he had missed a curfew, said sports information director Kenny Klein.

He said the athletic department learned about the sexual assault allegations only that afternoon.

The university declined to say Sunday why Jones had been kicked off the team, but Pitino said he was "finished."

c*x, one of three lawyers for Jones, said in court that the former player has cooperated from "the first minute" of the investigation, and Brown confirmed he had given a statement.

Arguing against setting a cash bond for their client, c*x and Ryan McCall noted that he has no prior record, surrendered voluntarily and is assisting police.

Collins released him on home incarceration, in lieu of a $25,000 bond, but ordered him to have no contact with either woman. She said if he does, "I will personally send police after you."

She ordered Jones to appear in court on March 9.

Story continues after video

"He hasn't received any special treatment," said attorney Scott C. c*x. "I'm impressed with how (Chris Jones) has handled this."

c*x said Jones, who is from Memphis, Tenn., has withdrawn from U of L to focus on his defense and is living in a hotel until he finds an apartment.

Police had cited him as a flight risk, but c*x said he has no intention of leaving Louisville.

Another lawyer for Jones, Rob Eggert, asked Collins to order U of L to preserve video recordings from security cameras inside Cardinal Towne, saying that they will help prove Jones' innocence.

Brown said there are many cameras in the building and that police are in the process of reviewing recordings.

CHRIS JONES TIMELINE

Feb. 17 Jones sends threatening text to a girlfriend.

Feb. 17 Coach Rick Pitino learns about the text during a team dinner, removes Jones from the dinner table and immediately suspends him from the team. Reached that night by The Courier-Journal, Pitino says he was "not sure" if Jones would only be suspended for one game. "Maybe longer," he says.

Feb. 18 Playing without Jones, U of L loses at Syracuse 69-59. Pitino says in his postgame comments that Jones may never play for U of L again.

Feb. 19 Jones surrenders his cell phone and is allowed to return to the team, subject to strict internal disciplinary measures, including a curfew.

Feb. 21 Jones leads the Cardinals to a comeback 55-53 win over Miami. After the game, he takes blame for his suspension.

Feb. 22 Between 2 and 4 a.m. at Cardinal Towne apartments, Jones allegedly rapes and sodomizes one woman, and, with two accomplices, rapes and sodomizes a second.

Feb. 22 Noon. U of L athletics hears Jones violated his curfew and committed other unspecified violations. He is dismissed from the team. School later hears he is being investigated in sexual assaults. Reached that night, Pitino says only that Jones is "finished" at U of L and refuses further comment.

Feb. 25 Warrant signed for Jones' arrest on rape and sodomy charges.

Feb. 26 Jones surrenders and pleads not guilty in Jefferson District Court; released on home incarceration.

Watch: Local singers compete on 'American Idol'

Clark Beckham performs on 'American Idol'(Photo: Jeff Neira/Fox)

Three Middle Tennessee singers are among the top 24 contestants on "American Idol" this season, and two of them took the stage during Wednesday night's show.

Many "Idol" observers thought Clark Beckham of White House had one of the night's strongest performances with Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman."

The 22-year-old has busked on Nashville's Lower Broadway, but he ditched the acoustic guitar for his performance, and seemed very comfortable on stage at the Fillmore Theater in Detroit.

Keith Urban stood up to applaud Beckham, but no one is a bigger Beckham fan on the judging panel than Jennifer Lopez.

"Goosies all day," she told him, referring to the goosebumps on her arms.

Eighteen-year-old Riley Bria of Spring Hill seemed a little less comfortable in the spotlight. His vocal performance on Eric Church's "Homeboy" was unsteady at first, and nerves might have gotten in the way of the charisma and confidence he had in his first audition.

Still, the judges were generous, and Harry Connick Jr. came up with a new nickname for the long-haired, guitar-toting country singer: "Keith Suburban."

"American Idol" continues on Thursday with performances from the top 12 female contestants, including Columbia'sSarina-Joi Crowe.

"Idol" airs at 7 p.m. CT on Wednesdays and Thursdays on Fox.

Cleveland Browns have no easy answers for what to do at tight end: Tom Reed ...

BEREA, Ohio -- On a day Cleveland went logo loco, the local football franchise also announced Brownie the Elf would return for another season.

Now that he's not using his hands to make the Johny Manziel money sign -- see countless Twitter avatars -- the club might need to employ him as a tight end.

Although the Browns' quarterback quandary continues to dominate headlines, there are no easy answers at a position of growing importance. Should they retain oft-injured Jordan Cameron? Spend big money to acquire a tight end in free agency? Or select one in the draft?

The best solution might involve a kid named Clive Walford, who sounds like he should be a love interest of Lady Mary Crawley on Downton Abbey. But that's getting ahead of our story.

It wasn't long ago the Browns appeared set at tight end after Cameron enjoyed his breakout Pro Bowl season in 2013. Remember when fans were concerned about giving center Alex Mack too much money because the team would need it to re-sign Josh Gordon and Cameron?

The tight end possesses good size, high character and acrobatic pass-catching abilities. The only thing scarier than his athletic ability is his medical file. That's what makes re-signing him or placing a franchise tag on Cameron so problematic. He's sustained a concussion in each of the past three years and also missed time last season with a shoulder injury.

Despite having the league's third-most salary cap space, it's understandable why the Browns might balk at committing to Cameron. They have until Monday to decide whether to franchise him for one season at $8.8 million. It's a tough call and it wouldn't be surprising to see the Browns allow him to walk.

Brownie the Elf is back, but his pass-catching skills are limited.city-data.com

At his best, the USC product represents the new breed of tight ends who stress defenses in the seams with the matchup problems they create. Picture Cameron's 80-yard touchdown against the Panthers in Week 15.

But he's not the only tight end of value who could hit the market March 10. The biggest name is the Broncos' Julius Thomas. The 6-4, 251-pounder grabbed 24 TD receptions over the past two seasons, making him one of the league's top red-zone threats. But Thomas comes with injury concerns, as well.

There's also the matter of who's throwing the passes. Teams must ask themselves whether the tight end would thrive without Peyton Manning as his quarterback and Demaryius Thomas creating space for him at wide receiver?

Regardless, he should attract ample suitors and the Browns probably would need to seriously overpay for Thomas' services. Other free-agent possibilities include Dolphins' Charles Clay and Ravens' Owen Daniels. Clay is an intriguing figure, but he could command $6 million per season on the open market. He's also coming off an injury-plagued season. There's a strong chance Clay remains with the Dolphins.

The Browns are meeting with Eagles' discard James Casey, who has a combined six receptions in the past two seasons. The club already has dependable depth tight ends in Gary Barnidge and Jim Dray.

If the Browns don't re-sign Cameron, their best bet to land an impact tight end might be in the draft, perhaps in the second or third round.

A dream scenario is University of Minnesota's Maxx Williams -- likened to the Cowboys' Jason Witten -- falling to them at No. 43 overall. Considered the best prospect at the position, Williams is 6-4, 249 pounds with good hands and NFL bloodlines. (His father, Brian, is a former Giants' center.) But if the Broncos lose Thomas it's easy to imagine them snatching Williams late in the first round.

That brings us to our man, Clive. Walford is 6-4, 251 pounds of attitude. He showed improvement in each of his four seasons at Miami and impressed scouts with his Senior Bowl practice week.

"I am the best tight end in this draft ... because I can block, I can catch, I can run after the catch, do everything that a tight end is expected to do," said Walford, who registered 44 receptions for 676 yards and seven TDs last season.

Scouts have questions, however, about his consistency and penchant for mental mistakes. Who else, then? Maybe, Ohio State's Jeff Heuerman as a mid-round alternative.

There are no certainties here for the Browns other than they need a good tight end. Absent a high-profile quarterback, they must surround whoever wins the job with talent at the skill positions to compete in the AFC North.

The Browns should get a quality receiver if they dedicate a first-round pick to acquiring one. The tight end options are a different story.

As for Brownie, he might be able to throw a decent stiff arm, but he lacks good foot speed and catching radius. Besides, many NFL talent evaluators see him as a two-dimensional figure.

Bulls' Derrick Rose to undergo knee surgery again

CHICAGO Derrick Roses knee has failed him again.

The Bulls star will have surgery on his right knee for the second straight season, casting doubt on whether the once dynamic point guard will ever be the same after a series of injuries.

The team announced Tuesday night that Rose was feeling pain in his knee, and an MRI exam confirmed a medial meniscus tear.

The 2011 NBA MVP played in only 10 games last season before he had surgery for the same injury in November 2013, shelving him for the year, but the Bulls said a timetable for his return will be determined after the operation.

Its unclear when Rose re-injured the knee. He appeared to be rounding into form last month, averaging 22.6 points over his final 14 games before the All-Star break, but he had struggled since returning to the court after the time off.

Rose became the latest NBA star to be sidelined for a significant period within the past few days.

Chris Bosh will miss the rest of the season after the Heat announced blood clots were found on one of his lungs. Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony (left knee surgery) wont return this season, either.

Thunder star Kevin Durant had surgery on his right foot, and Pelicans big man Anthony Davis has a sprained right shoulder. Both are expected back this season.

Roses status remains to be seen.

Rose had eight points on 1-for-13 shooting while playing almost 33 minutes in Monday nights 87-71 victory over Milwaukee. He averaged 10.7 points on 23.5 percent shooting in Chicagos first three games after the break.

Its a big blow for the surging Bulls (36-21), who have won six of seven and appeared to be picking up steam after a tough stretch. They lead the Central Division by a half-game over Cleveland, but any extended absence for Rose will make it quite difficult for Chicago to hold off LeBron James and the Cavaliers.

James was one of several NBA stars who took to social media to express their support for Rose, who has been dogged by injuries since he won the MVP award:

Rose was limited to 39 games during the 2011-12 season, and tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in Game 1 of the 2012 playoffs against Philadelphia. He missed the next season altogether, and then last season was cut short by the right knee surgery.

Rose, 26, is averaging 18.4 points and 5.0 assists in 46 games this season. He has flashed his MVP form at times, attacking the rim, but his outside shot has been unreliable. He is shooting just 40.7 percent, the second-lowest average of his career, and is committing 3.2 turnovers per game.

The Bulls have shuffled players in and out of the lineup because of various ailments and have struggled to develop continuity after making some big moves last summer. They signed All-Star Pau Gasol, giving them a big scoring presence inside, and with Rose back after missing most of the past two years, the Bulls came in looking to contend for a championship.

Now they wait to see how long Rose will be out with this injury.

John Legend and Common Say 'Selma' Battle Lives on in Voting Restrictions ...

In case you missed it: After winning Best Original Song for Selmas Glory, singer-songwriter John Legend told the rapt audience that the struggle for justice is not over. We know that the Voting Rights Act that they fought for 50 years ago is being compromised right now, he said, also mentioning in his short but passionate speech that there are more black men under correctional control today than were under slavery in 1850.*

Co-winner and rapper Common stressed the universality of the Selma march, which has its 50th anniversary next month: The spirit of this bridge connects the kid from the south side of Chicago, dreaming of a better life; to those in France, fighting for freedom of expression; to the people of Hong Kong, protesting for democracy.

Shortly before accepting their award, Legend and Common turned in an inspiring performance of Glory:

The Selma musicians werent the only winners highlighting social issues at the Oscars last night. While accepting the award for Best Documentary, Citizenfour director Laura Poitras thanked Edward Snowden and other whistleblowers for their courage.

Mexican-born Birdman director Alejandro Gonzlez Irritu said he prays that Mexicans can build the government that we deserve, and that Mexican immigrants in the United States can be treated with the same dignity and respect as the ones who came before and built this incredible immigrant nation.

Patricia Arquette, who was named best supporting actress of the year for her performance in Boyhood, called for wage equality and equal rights for women.

Producer Dana Perry dedicated her Oscar for best documentary short (for Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1) to her son who committed suicide, saying We should talk about suicide out loud.

Best Adapted Screenplay winner (for Imitation Game) Graham Moore extolled a similar message, referencing his own suicide attempt as a teen. I would like this moment to be for this kid out there who feels like shes weird or shes different or she doesnt fit in anywhere, he began. Yes, you do. I promise you do. Stay weird, stay different, and then, when its your turn, and you are standing on this stage, please pass the same message to the next person who comes along.

*Note: The Washington Post checked Legends facts and determined he got it mostly right. The number of incarcerated African-American men does outnumber slaves in 1850, but the percentage of the population is lower. You can read more about that at The Fix.

Karl Lagerfeld Praises "Extremely Cheerful, Lovable" Julianne Moore, Talks Her ...

When it came time to pick a designer to create her 2015 Academy Award gown Julianne Moore knew exactly what to do: Call Karl.

Chanel's creative director Karl Lagerfeld even convinced the now-Oscar winner and her stylist Leslie Fremar to say yes to the dress with justone sketch.

That sketch did, however, get a slight update after the Still Alice star saw a design on the Chanel Couture show that she liked. So Karl tweaked his original idea to include similar elements from the runway look. Then his team of 27 sewing experts got done to business.

NEWS: 2015 Oscars Red Carpet by the numbers

987 hours and 80,000 hand-painted sequins later Moore's one-of-a-kind dress was ready for the red carpet.

"I am so happy Julianne won the Oscar for her great talent. I've known her for years, and was always her greatest fanas an actress and also as a woman," Lagerfeld told Women's Wear Daily. "She is the perfect illustration of what I understand to be womanhood in the best sense of the word. She is fun, down to earth and an extremely cheerful, loveable person. I am really happy for her."

Ditto that, Karl.

The making of Eddie Redmayne

The school in question might have been significant: Redmayne is an old Etonian, an exact contemporary of Prince Williams (the two were both members of Pop, the flamboyantly waistcoated school society). His teacher, Simon Dormandy, was an inspiring figure: "he is still the person whose advice I seek," says Redmayne.

Redmaynes background is solid, Chelsea establishment, his father, Richard, a banker, his mother, Patricia, the head of a relocation business. Eddie was the only one of his four siblings who was drawn towards the arts.

His mother has said that her son is "a performer and has been ever since he was five and he first started singing at school. I remember at his 21st birthday one of his friends gave a speech saying they were looking forward to seeing him at the Oscars."

Redmayne didnt train as an actor. After Eton he headed up to Cambridge, where he studied art history. He was part of a notable generation of young British actors at the university, making friends with Tom Hiddleston and Rebecca Hall and Dan Stevens.

After his success in Twelfth Night, Redmayne continued to work on the stage. He picked up awards for his role in Edward Albees The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? in 2004, and in 2010 he was recognised with Olivier and Tony Awards for his part as Mark Rothkos (fictional) young assistant Ken in John Logans Red, which took him from North Londons Donmar Warehouse to Broadway.

Eddie Redmayne (bottom row fourth from right) at Eton,at the same time as Prince William (top row, far right)

Redmayne has never been afraid to take on difficult roles, using his almost unnerving beauty to great effect. In his first film, Like Minds (2006), he played a schoolboy suspected of murder, and in 2007s Savage Grace, he played a boy having an incestuous relationship with his mother, played by fellow Oscar-winner Julianne Moore.

Playing Hawking, though, has been his biggest challenge. Redmayne was assiduous about his research, talking to MND sufferers and their families, studying film footage of Hawking and working with a choreographer to get his physical performance absolutely right. Shooting the film out of sequence, he carried a vast scroll of paper to pinpoint Hawkings physical state at any given moment.

Redmayne as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything

When I met Redmayne in December 2014, the most striking thing about his attitude to the role was his sense of responsibility. You hear it in the speeches hes given since the awards started rolling in (he won the Bafta for Best Actor, as well as the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Award).

"[The Oscar] belongs to one exceptional family: Stephen, Jane, Jonathan and the Hawking children," he said when accepting his Oscar. "And I will be its custodian."

There is a steadiness, too, in his private life: he recently got married to Hannah Bagshawe, who hes known since they were teenagers.

Where will Redmaynes career take him next? Hes currently filming The Danish Girl under the direction of Tom Hooper. In it he plays the painter Einar Wegener, who in 1930 became one of the first people to change s*x, a throwback to his Eton days, when he was often cast in female parts out of necessity. Ladbrokes are already offering odds of 12/1 that Redmayne will win the Best Actor award again next year. Quietly, almost by accident, he has taken a seat at Hollywoods top table.

Lady Gaga: The Anti-Niche

At the recent Oscar Awards, Lady Gaga took the world by storm by stunning the audience with her beautiful tribute to The Sound of Music. Many didn't know this pop diva was such a trained and beautiful vocalist. Almost operatic. Known for her outlandish outfits, dance-beat tunes and her ability to stir things up, this was quite a departure. But then again, she did show up wearing what many have called dishwashing gloves.

This is one pop star that we have seen really spreading her wings and broadening her audience lately. Her recent duet album with Tony Bennett has received much acclaim. And now this. Singing "The Hills Are Alive" and embracing Julie Andrews. Just when you thought you had the world figured out.

Personally, I love what I'm seeing here and congratulate Lady Gaga. She is tossing aside the old notion that we can only be known for doing one thing. That, in order to be successful, you must find a niche. And stay in it. Forever. Lady Gaga is anything but in a niche. In fact, I'd say she's the anti-niche.

Lady Gaga is an entertainer. Of course I don't know what she would say she "stands for", as in her purpose in life, but I would venture to say it has something to do with embracing who you are. Offering no apologies. Just simply being unapologetically who you are. Having built a massive following of fans called Little Monsters, one could say Lady Gaga has granted permission to millions to be themselves.

That to me, is one of "My Favorite Things" in seeing Lady Gaga crooning with Tony Bennett, and belting out "Edelweiss." She represents the freedom available to all of us to be who we are, take a stand for what we believe and deliver our message across a variety of mediums. Gaga is representative of what I refer to as The New Renaissance.

The future belongs to the creatives. Especially in business. This is our time to not be boxed in by the old notion of a niche and only being able to express ourselves in one way. The future holds a place for entrepreneurs, artists, and entertainers to express their values and the message of their work across a variety of mediums.

It's the new age of diversity. A time of unparalleled creative freedom. When we express ourselves and explore all our creative inclinations, we can, like Lady Gaga, "Climb Every Mountain."

CHRIS KYLE'S MURDERER AND PSYCHOTROPIC DRUGS

He died because someone wanted to kill him.-Taya Kyle

Chris Kyle, The American sniper, was quite an American in so many ways. He was known to his Navy SEAL brethren as The Legend and to his enemies as Al Shaitan, the Devil.

The Navy had confirmed 160 kills to Kyles credit. However, both he and his comrades counted double that number. Because of his high success rate of taking out American enemies, there was an $80,000 bounty put on his head. As a result, Chris Kyles wife Taya stated, He died because someone wanted to kill him. And kill him, they did.

The Chris Kyle murder case is taking precedent on many headlines across the country. Kyle was shot 6 times while his friend Chad Littlefield had been shot seven times by Eddie Ray Routh, who is claiming mental insanity as his defense.

The prosecutor in the case claims that Routh said some kind of odd statements while being recorded. Among those statements were: I dont know if Im going insane, Its disease right now, If its voodoo upon us, Is the apocalypse upon us right now?, I can feel everybody feeding on my soul. When Routh was told by a police officer, You will defeat the evil.and then that feeling that you have is going to go away, he disagreed, saying, It wont though, cause all its gonna do is diffuse in my brain.

In addition, it was reported both Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield texted one another while the trio drove to the gun range, This dude is straight-up nuts. One has to ask why two tried and true intelligent military men would take a man like this to a gun range.

Now, we know that Rouths defense team are attempting to make him out as the victim who made a choice to kill two innocent men by claiming that he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental illnesses that clouded his perception of reality.

We know that Routh did not serve in the military in such a capacity in which he could claim PTSD, due to the fact that he was never in battle.

We also know that Routh was in and out of mental hospitals after having suicidal thoughts following his discharge from the Marines in 2010. It was reported that he was released from a mental hospital about a week before the slayings and given anti-psychotic drugs.

If those in the military, who are diagnosed with depression anxiety or some other form of mental illness, refuse to take those prescribed drugs, then they are kicked to the curb by the government that they served.

Why are the medical institutions prescribing drugs to Americans that were illegal street drugs back in the 50s?

What most Americans may not be aware of is the fact that these are the same dangerous drugs that are being pushed on anyone that may be vulnerable and ignorant of the facts concerning these prescriptions.

While Routh and his defense team continue down the road of attempting to paint the picture of a poor victim who didnt know right from wrong, consider that Routh is a full-grown man drinking whisky along with smoking marijuana, dangerously mixing these two substances with anti-psychotic drugs. He then makes the choice to kill two of Americas finest and rolls through Taco Bell for two burritos. Does that sound like a victim to you? Me neither.

Mr. Routh cant credibly cry that the devil made me do it. It is clear that the choices that he made in service to the devil are the ones that have him in the predicament that he is in today, period.

History of Anti-Depressants

ADHD is a prime example of a fictitious disease.

These were the words of Leon Eisenberg, the "scientific father of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)," in his last interview before his death. Keep in mind that some of the same drugs that are administered for ADHD are the same drugs that have been prescribed to mass killers.

Do you remember the Columbine Massacre? Eric Harris, age 18, shot 12 fellow students and a teacher; he had been taking Luvox.

What of Jeff Weise, age 17, from Red Lake, Minnesota he killed 9 people and then himself. He was on Prozac.

Or what of Chris Pittman, age 12, shot and killed his grandparents at close range, and then set their house on fire. He was on Zoloft. The list goes on and on.

Why are parents allowing pharmaceutical companies to drug their kids in the first place (Prov. 22:6) ?

This raises the following question concerning these drugs: Are they safe?

Read the antidepressant black-box warning for yourselves, and you will be alarmed by the side effects listed on the inserts:

  • Confusion
  • Depersonalization
  • Hostility
  • Hallucinations
  • Manic reactions
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Delusions
  • Feeling drunk
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Homicidal ideation

Am I saying that drugs made Eddie Ray Routh do what he did, or am I saying that drugs made any of the young people I mentioned do what they did?

No.

However, clearly they were a component in every one of these incidents and, therefore, should be considered dangerous.

The actress steamed up the red carpet at the 87th Academy Awards but shared an uncomfortable back-and-forth with her mother

Dakota Johnsonturned the heat way up on a soggy Oscars red carpet on Sunday in a luscious blood redSaint Laurent gown.

Having literally beentied up with co-star Jamie Dornan over recent months, the Fifty Shades of Grey actress brought her mother, Melanie Griffith, as her date to Hollywoods biggest night.

However, Working Girl starGriffith couldnt suppress herdiscomfort when grilled about whether shed gone to see her daughter having X-rated on-camera s*x in the BDSM film, and the two generations of actresses shared a very awkwardback-and-forth live on national TV.

WhenABC host Lara Spencers asked Griffith if she has seen the Valentines Day movie clearly, she struckon a sore subject.

No,Griffith curtlyreplied.Scowling, Johnson said: Maybe one day, with a shrug.

But her mom isnt so sure. I dont think I can, I think it would be strange, she said.Well shes a really good actress, I dont need to seethat to know how good she is, Griffith said after some attempts at saving the scene by Spencer.

The subject is an obvious sticking point between the pair, as Johnson digressed to a pouting teenager for a moment, snapping:Alright! You dont have to see it. Jesus Christ.

The last time themother-daughter duo walked the Oscars red carpet together, Johnson really was a child. In 2000, then 10-year-old Dakota joined Griffith with her dad, Antonio Banderas. Then she shyly hid from the camera behind her mom, but this year she isa presenter.

When it came to her fashion choicefor the87th Academy Awards, Johnson, 25, has definitely grown up. Shehas stuck to muted grey and silver tones while promoting the sexybox office phenomenaover recent weeks, and seemed excited to break out a new color scheme in astreamlined dresswith a high slit up the side.

Heavy metallic details on the shoulder and a sweetheart neckline enhanced the stunning gown, which Johnson complimented with Forevermarkjewels and her hair in a simple ponytail.

Johnson wasnotthe only starrocking red on their way into the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland. Nominee Rosamund Pike went all out with crimson lace and red heels.

E! host Giuliana Rancic broke out of her own comfort zone in aMireille Dagher red lace gown, which enhanced her new auburn locks. Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatchs pregnant wife Sophie Huntercovered her baby bump in a flowing red Grecian gown with lacing up the side.

Kurt Busch's final appeal denied

Updated: February 22, 2015, 9:33 AM ET

By Bob Pockrass | ESPN.comKurt Busch's Final Appeal Denied

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Kurt Busch lost his final NASCAR appeal Saturday night to get his indefinite suspension rescinded prior to the Daytona 500, the sport's biggest race that is set to go green Sunday afternoon.

NASCAR suspended the Stewart-Haas Racing driver Friday after the release of a Kent County (Delaware) Family Court commissioner opinion that detailed why he believed Busch had committed an act of domestic violence against ex-girlfriend Patricia Driscoll.

Busch lost his initial appeal to a three-member NASCAR-appointed panel Saturday afternoon and then made an appeal Saturday night to NASCAR Final Appeals Officer Bryan Moss. A former president of Gulfstream who was named as NASCAR's top appeals boss in 2014, Moss had not ruled on any final appeal until Saturday night.

Kyle Busch Will Not Race In Daytona 500

Updated: February 22, 2015, 2:08 AM ET

By Bob Pockrass | ESPN.comKyle Busch Will Not Race In Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Kyle Buschwill miss the Daytona 500 after suffering a broken right leg and left foot following a hard crash into an interior concrete wall during an Xfinity Series race Saturday at Daytona International Speedway.

[+] Enlarge

Brian Lawdermilk/Getty ImagesKyle Busch was stretchered off after his car slammed into an infield concrete wall during the Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway.

Busch needed assistance getting out of his car after it slammed into a wall that did not have an energy-absorbing steel-and-foam energy reduction (SAFER) barrier. His right leg was placed in an air cast before he was transported by ambulance to nearby Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where he underwent surgery Saturday night for a compound fracture of his lower right leg. He also suffered a mid-foot fracture in his left foot.

The team reported late Saturday night the surgery was successful and that Busch would remain hospitalized for observation.

Busch's wife, Samantha, offered an update on Twitter early Sunday morning: "In the recovery room with Kyle he's alert n chatting. Surgery went well. We thank you all for the support, prayers and love during this time."

Daytona track president Joie Chitwood said the speedway failed for not having the soft walls and will start next week on having them installed "on every inch of our property."

"The Daytona International Speedway did not live up to its responsibility today," Chitwood said. "We should have had SAFER barrier there. We're going to fix that. We're going to fix that right now."

Busch was supposed to start fourth Sunday in the Daytona 500. Matt Crafton, a two-time Truck Series champion who has never raced in the Daytona 500, will replace Busch in the No. 18 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing.

More from ESPN.com

Many think SAFER barriers -- the so-called soft walls -- should be on every inch of a track. For myriad reasons, it's not so simple. As Marty Smith writes, the question remains: Is NASCAR SAFER enough? Story

Kyle Busch suffered a broken right leg and a fractured left foot when his race car struck a cement wall Saturday night at Daytona. The million-dollar question: When will we learn? Story

Busch will be out for an unspecified period of time. JGR officials said he was in good spirits Saturday night. It was not immediately clear whether he would need additional surgery.

The accident occurred when Busch was racing directly behind JGR teammate Erik Jones. Jones got turned and Busch got clipped. Busch's car sped left across an area of the track used as an entrance to the road course portion of the speedway and then slammed hard into an interior concrete wall.

Busch climbed out of the car before laying down on the grass near his car.His wife was crying as she left the infield care center with team owner Joe Gibbs and team president J.D. Gibbs. Samantha Busch is pregnant with the couple's first child, a boy, due in May.

The wall did not have a SAFER barrier, which NASCAR has had installed in the turns and other areas at tracks. NASCAR has consistently been criticized for not having the barriers everywhere on the inside and outside walls on ovals.

This is the second consecutive year that Daytona International Speedway, a track where the cars are limited in horsepower because of the high speeds, has been criticized for not having enough SAFER barrier.

Kevin Harvick hit a concrete wall just beyond the pit exit last year -- not too far from where Busch hit Saturday.

The track added 2,400 feet of SAFER barrier before its race in July, but only to areas of the outside wall and not in the area where Harvick hit.

"This is not going to happen again," Chitwood said. "We did not live up to our responsibility, and the fix starts right now."

Chitwood said the speedway would install tire packs Saturday night along the 850-linear-foot section of concrete wall where Busch crashed so it will be padded in time for Sunday's 500.

He said DIS already has "tens of thousands" linear feet of walls covered in SAFER barrier -- added during five separate installations.

Reaction from the crash was swift on social media from drivers, including six-time championJimmie Johnson, who called on NASCAR to install the energy-absorbing material everywhere at race tracks.

Man I hope @KyleBusch is alright... It's beyond me why we don't have soft walls everywhere. #nascar @DISupdates

Fellow Sprint Cup drivers Denny Hamlin, Danica Patrick and Ricky Stenhouse all visited Busch in the hospital Saturday night.

NASCAR executive vice president Steve O'Donnell said Saturday that the organization will step up talks with tracks about adding SAFER barriers to all areas surrounding the racing surface.

"We always have these conversations with the racetracks," O'Donnell said. "The racetracks know that and work together with us on the SAFER barrier recommendations. We will accelerate those talks with the tracks. We want this sport to be as safe as possible, for not only our drivers but everyone who participates in this sport and the race fans as well."

Former driver Jeff Burton, now a television analyst, called on NASCAR to overcome costs: "It's very expensive but we have to find a way."

And Regan Smith, who earlier in Saturday's race rolled his car for the first time in his career, said it was inexcusable in 2015 for tracks hosting national events not to have SAFER barriers everywhere.

"I'm genuinely furious right now," Smith tweeted.

Ty Dillon, the grandson of Richard Childress, said after Saturday's race that NASCAR should have SAFER barriers "everywhere."

"We're going so fast," Dillon said. "... I think we can probably afford it. I hate to hear about anybody in our sport getting injured. The sport's advanced so far in safety that we shouldn't have any crazy, bad injuries."

Busch has 29 career Sprint Cup wins in 365 career starts. His best finish in the standings was fourth in 2013.

Busch will not be awarded any points for Sunday's race. NASCAR, which requires drivers to compete each week to be eligible for its season-long championship, would have to grant Busch an exemption to not start a race he qualified for as well as to miss any future events and still be eligible for the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Ryan Reed won the Xfinity race with a late pass of Brad Keselowski.

John Oreovicz of ESPN.com and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Hundreds gather to honor Malcolm X on anniversary of assassination

Activists, actors and politicians gathered Saturday in New York City to honor civil rights leader Malcolm X with a ceremony at the Harlem site where he was killed 50 years ago.

About 300 people converged to hear remarks from one of Malcolm Xs six daughters, Ilyasah Shabazz, as well as elected officials. The ceremony was held at the Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center, formerly known as the Audubon Ballroom.

A blue light shone onto the floor in the exact spot where he was killed. A mural with images of Malcolm X adorned a wall.

He was just a young man who gave all that he possibly could, Shabazz said after a moment of silence marking the time of his death.

Malcolm X, whose full name was El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, was 39 when he was shot in the theater on Feb. 21, 1965, as he was preparing to address several hundred of his followers.

By the time he died, the Muslim leader had moderated his militant message of black separatism and pride but was still very much a passionate advocate of black unity, self-respect and self-reliance. Three members of the Nation of Islam were convicted of murder in his death. He had repudiated the Nation of Islam less than a year earlier.

In an interview with The Associated Press on the eve of the anniversary observance, Shabazz said she was pleased that the site is now a place for people to get a sense of empowerment.

One of the great things about Malcolm is that he redefined the civil rights movement to include a human rights agenda, she said. So while we are focusing on integrating schools, integrating housing and all these other things, Malcolm said that we demand our human rights by any means necessary. And that means that we have to address these problems. That we have to identify them, and absolutely discuss them.

Social and political activist Ron Daniels delivered the keynote address, calling Malcolm X a man of honesty and integrity. He ended his speech with chants of Long Live Malcolm X! as people stood and clapped.

The ceremony concluded with a reading by actor Delroy Lindo of a eulogy for Malcolm X that was written by the late actor and activist Ossie Davis.
