Rafa Marquez heroics lead Mexico over Uruguay at Copa America

Mexico v Chile - 2016 Men"s World Olympic Qualification Tournament

Longtime Mexico captain Rafa Marquez was the hero in Mexico"s Copa America opener, scoring the game-winning goal in a wild 3-1 triumph over Uruguay at a raucous University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Uruguay had the trifecta of misfortune between the pregame festivities and halftime. Tournament organizers unfathomably played the Chilean national anthem for Uruguay, citing "human error" in a forced statement. Within four minutes, Alvaro Pereira had headed home Andres Guardado"s cross into his own net, and right before halftime Matias Vecino picked up his second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Jesus "Tecatito" Corona.

Uruguay played better in the second half even with the man disadvantage, and it found an equalizer in the 74th minute through the clutch Diego Godin, who scored off a free kick moments after Guardado was sent off. The 37-year Marquez made the difference, though, rifling home a close range effort into the upper right-hand corner after a set piece fell his way in the 85th minute.

Hector Herrera finished off the win with a header at the goal mouth, as Hirving Lozano"s cross to Raul Jimenez was then flicked Herrera"s way, and he nudged home the simple touch to seal the three-point haul.

Here are three thoughts on the match:

Finally, a game that entertains

Copa America Centenario hasn"t exactly gotten off to the most electric of starts. The USA"s match vs. Colombia in the opener on Friday was essentially over at halftime. Saturday"s triple-header yielded one (ONE!) goal between them, with a heartbreaking Haiti miss and controversially disallowed goal for Ecuador the closest things to resemble genuine excitement and talking points. Before this game, there hadn"t been one in which both teams scored. Given that Neymar appears more interested in sitting with Jamie Foxx, bagging selfies with Justin Bieber and attending the NBA finals, perhaps it"s no surprise that the play on the field hasn"t exactly reflected the best this hemisphere has to offer.

Well, that finally changed some in Arizona, where Mexico and Uruguay put on a worthy show in front of a capacity, pro-Mexico crowd. Even without Luis Suarez active (he did bark out orders as a de facto coach from the sideline), and despite being down a man, Uruguay dug in and showed its guile, changing its tactics and seizing a stronger hold on the game over the second half. When Guardado was sent off, Uruguay pounced.

Mexico came right back and found its winning strikes, while Uruguay"s players made a beeline for the officiating crew after the match, believing offside should have been called prior to Marquez"s winning strike.

It"s a top-heavy tournament field, so if Mexico-Uruguay is any indication, the heavyweight bouts will be this competition"s saving grace.

Rafa Marquez won"t go away

If it seems like Marquez has been playing for Mexico for 20 years, it"s because he has. His first cap came in 1997, he"s captained Mexico in four World Cups, and manager after manager continues turning to him.

He"s a villain in U.S. and MLS circles, revered in Mexico (even after the penalty he conceded to Arjen Robben in the 2014 World Cup) and he"s a hero again after his laser of a shot that left Fernando Muslera no chance and secured the three points.

It hasn"t always been pretty, and his time in MLS was an absolute travesty, but as long as he"s playing,Rafais Mexico"s heartbeat, for better or worse.

A key three for El Tri

These three points were the most important for Mexico in the group stage. Given it"ll be highly favored against its next two opponents, Jamaica and Venezuela, beating Uruguay effectively sealed first place in Group C, provided that the expected unfolds (yes, "that"s why they play the games," but this also happens to appear to be as predictable of a tournament field as there is in a group stage). Now, of course, Argentina must do its part and win Group D, but should Messi & Co. take care of business, Mexico will avoid the world"s top-ranked team in a potential quarterfinal. There"s a long road before then, but given Mexico"s form, talent and pathway, it all seems pretty clear.

Mexico"s unbeaten run is up to 20, and Mexico improves to 8-0-0 under Juan Carlos Osorio, though its shutout streak is over. For as much strife as Mexico had leading into the 2014 World Cup and at the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup (save for the final, where it was excellent), El Tri appears to have things figured out, certainly more than any other CONCACAF side, and its mental strength to remain in the game after Godin"s equalizer wasn"t necessarily a hallmark of past sides.

Attacking players" movement both on and off the ball kept Uruguay"s defenders stretched and on edge all night. Javier Aquino and Tecatitogot forward at will and dazzled in 1-v-1 situations over the first 45 minutes. Miguel Layun"s set-up to Chicharito with a curled early cross from the right in the first half was sublime, with the star forward only unable to put a shot on frame because of a heroic tackle by Atletico Madrid"s Jose Gimenez. Another Gimenez tackle prevented another would-be Chicharito goal in the second half.

Simply put, Mexico is positioned for a deep run with its toughest group game out of the way and confidence rising even higher.

Corey Brown looking forward to rematch with Aqib Talib

Aqib Talib Falls on Set... Gets Back Up in Excitement! | Super Bowl 50 Post Game | Denver Broncos

More than three months removed from Super Bowl 50, Carolina Panthers wide receiver Corey Brown is still eager for his upcoming rematch with Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib.

Talib, you may remember, intentionally slung Brown down by his facemask in the first half of Denver"s 24-10 victory in Santa Clara. The two continued to trash talk one another throughout the game before Brown suffered a concussion in the third quarter and didn"t return.

While Brown"s memory is a bit unclear after the concussion, his remembrance of Talib is unblemished.

"He"s a Pro Bowler; he"s this and that, going up an undrafted guy," Brown told Black & Blue Review. "I guess he thinks he can bully, but that ain"t happening. Nobody"s going to bully me."

Brown finished the game with four receptions for 80 yards, but it was the Broncos who came out victorious. Nonetheless, there was talk after the game that Talib would be suspended for a game the following year, but he was ultimately just fined. And that was OK with Brown.

"I think he should be out there," he says. "I would be glad to see him play Week 1. I would love to play against him."

Tennis|Novak Djokovic"s Latest Opponent in His French Open Quest? His Temper

Novak Djokovic Practice For The Final - Roland Garros 2016

After squandering that opportunity with a unforced forehand error, he swiped his racket at the clay in frustration. It struck the ground and flew backward not Djokovics intent at considerable speed, missing a linesman by a small margin after he twisted away from its flight path.

Oh, I was very nervous, Vajda said of the tossed racket. Oh my gosh, I dont know why he did it. Im not very happy about this. It could turn to be not good for him.

Players have been defaulted on the spot for hitting officials or ball people with rackets or b***s: Tim Henman during a doubles match at Wimbledon in 1995; Richard Gasquet during qualifying at the 2004 United States Open. David Nalbandian was disqualified during the final at Queens Club in 2012 after kicking an advertising board into a line judges leg.

There are no automatic defaults, said Stefan Fransson, the French Open tournament referee. The decision is made based on each different situation.

The players intent and the consequences are part of the decision-making equation, but supervisors made it clear on Thursday that if a player hit an official with a thrown racket and caused an injury, there would be a default.

The bottom line: Djokovic was lucky, very lucky, even if he was not much in the mood to dwell on it after his 11th straight victory over Berdych.

Asked if he realized how close he had come to hitting the line judge, Djokovic answered: I mean, its obvious what I tried to do. I dont understand your question. I threw a racket on the ground, and it slipped and almost hit the line umpire. I was lucky there. Thats all.

Anger management has been an issue for Djokovic of late. He remains the worlds dominant player by a wide margin, but it has been a challenging clay-court season, one in which he has sometimes snapped with little warning. In Rome last month, he pushed the chair umpire Carlos Bernardess arm out of the way as they were examining a ball mark on the clay (and received no penalty from the ATP). In the final against Andy Murray, a match Djokovic would go on to lose, he also flung his racket in frustration after losing his serve in the fourth game. It ended up bouncing into the stands.

No wonder Vajda wants to tape the grip to Djokovics hand.

When asked about the Rome and Roland Garros incidents, Djokovic said: Im just not thinking about those kind of situations. I am aware that I have been lucky, and I apologized to, you know, to people that have been in this particular situation with me and that could have been hurt by my racket. But, you know, it was never the intention. It was just some unfortunate bounce, but fortunate ending of that scenario.

Todays top players are mild-mannered compared to some combustible champions of the past; see Ilie Nastase, Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe. But Djokovics recent behavior could also be a reflection of the pressure he is feeling as his latest great chance at winning the French Open comes into clearer focus.

Vajda, the good-humored Slovakian who has been a key figure in Djokovics rise, understands the situation, but likes Djokovics chances.

Its more mental, he said. I think he has to refocus even more, and I hope he can find it. Hes fine so far, but this is getting closer, and he might be worse. So he has to stay calm and take it as a positive as he can, just be there in the match, just try to be present, which is tough. But he can do it.

Djokovic certainly recovered his composure quickly on Thursday, despite hearing a few disapproving whistles and boos from the French Open crowd that he has worked so hard to win over through the years. He went on to break Berdych in the game in which he threw his racket.

When tournament officials briefly stopped play with the drizzle intensifying at 3-3 in the third set, Djokovic quickly packed his bags and marched off court while Berdych fumed, maintaining that the conditions had not changed enough to warrant a stoppage.

This is an absolute circus; one big circus! he said to the supervisor, Wayne McEwen.

Berdych would not win another game after they resumed play less than 15 minutes later.

They are relying on someone who is closed in little room and saying that hes a meteorologist, and hes predicting whats going to happen or not, Berdych said later.

It has been a Drench Open, with the rainiest May in Paris since 1873. But it is the homestretch in June that has been the stumbling block for Djokovic, who has lost in three of the last four French Open finals.

He will have a huge edge in experience against Thiem, who advanced with a 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4, 6-1 quarterfinal victory over David Goffin. Thiem had never been past the fourth round at a major until now.

Djokovic won their two previous matches in straight sets, but both were on hardcourts. Thiem, who is seeded 13th and will break into the top 10 for the first time next week, is at his most dangerous on clay.

Hes playing the best tennis of his life, no doubt about it, Djokovic said.

Thiem is coached by Gunter Bresnik, a fellow Austrian who once worked with Boris Becker, the three-time Wimbledon champion. With Becker part of Djokovics coaching team, Fridays match will also be about Becker versus his former mentor.

With the rain playing nasty tricks on this years schedule, Friday will be the fourth straight day of singles play for Djokovic and Thiem. In the bottom half of the draw, Murray and Stan Wawrinka, who will meet in Fridays other semifinal, had Thursday off.

But Djokovic, a tightly wound man of late, was able to conserve precious resources by defeating Berdych in straight sets.

Very important, Vajda said. To save the energy and to save the best for tomorrow.

But the physical challenge is surely not the biggest challenge at this stage, not in his 12th visit to the French Open. There seems to be no point in Djokovic and his team trying to ignore the elephant in the room.

Exactly, Vajda said. Elephant in the room. Good one.
