Warriors vs. Thunder 2016 final score: Golden State wins a 108-101 thriller to force Game 7

Golden State Warriors vs OKC Thunder - Game 3 - Full Highlights - May 22, 2016 - 2016 NBA Playoffs

A great fourth quarter allowed the Warriors to come back and beat the Thunder to force Game 7.

The Warriors are not dead yet. After falling in a 1-3 hole in the first four games of the series, they have won two straight, including Saturday"s 108-101 thriller in Oklahoma City. Now the series is tied and there will be a decisive Game 7 played on Monday at the Oracle Arena. If Golden State prevails, it will be only the 10th time a team has come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the series.

The Warriors never looked comfortable in the first quarter. The Thunder, bolstered by their home crowd, played with more energy. Klay Thompson could get in a rhythm early, as Andre Roberson and Dion Waiters played great defense on him and there was always a big man around to challenge his shot inside. Stephen Curry missed his first three shots and the bench couldn"t do much damage when they checked in. Despite all those issues, they only trailed by three points after 12 minutes.

The Thunder continued to control the game but couldn"t break the game open. Kevin Durant, who had struggled in the first period, came alive and scored 12 in the second quarter. Serge Ibaka was aggressive on offense and Enes Kanter had a good stint off the bench. At one point, the lead was 13 points and momentum seemed to be going the Thunder"s way, as they were the ones making the big plays.

Yet, at the end of the half, the lead had been cut down to just four points. Three-pointers kept the Warriors in it, as they went 9-of-21 from beyond the arc in the first two quarter, while Oklahoma City connected on just two of their 14 attempts. Klay Thompson broke free and made most of the damage, going 3-of-5 from behind the three-point line while Stephen Curry, who went scoreless in the first quarter, hit 2-of-3.

Golden State was bound to start playing better. Early in the third quarter Thompson hit back to back three-pointers and it seemed a huge run was coming. Instead of panicking, however, the Thunder continued to play hard and ride Westbrook and Durant on offense, like they had all series long. Later on, Curry would be the one catching fire, going off for 14 points in the frame, but they weathered that storm, too. Their mettle was rewarded when, after some untimely Warrior turnovers, they actually managed to extend their lead to eight points going into the final period.

It seemed like the Thunder"s steadiness was going to give them the win. No matter what the Warriors did, they always had an answer. Yet, to beat Golden State, it"s imperative to put them away for good, and Oklahoma City failed to do that. Some Curry and Thompson heroics on offense and terrific Iguodala and Green plays on defense allowed Golden State to get ahead. The Thunder had their chances to retake control of the game but couldn"t. A Curry floater with 14 seconds to go put the Warriors up five and acted as the dagger.

As unlikely as it seemed just a few days ago, there will be a Game 7. The defending champions are not dead.

3 thing we learned from the Warriors" close winThe Warriors can always count on the three-pointer

Golden State looked jittery to start the game. They struggled with the Thunder"s length throughout the series and Saturday"s matchup was no exception. At times it looked like they were going to be ran out of the building by a sharper, more aggressive Thunder. Yet, their ability to shoot from outside kept them in it in the bad times and helped them take the game.

They shot 21-of-44 from beyond the arc, with Curry, Thompson and Green combining for 17 of the makes. One of the criticism the Warriors faced often before winning the championship was that they were a jump-shooting team that had no other weapons. They proved that to be false, but their identity is undoubtedly built around the three-pointer.

That"s not a weaknesses, obviously, but one of their biggest strengths, as they showed in Game 6.

Stephen Curry loves big moments

Curry had a historically great regular season and had plenty of memorable moments in this postseason, like his 17 overtime points against the Trail Blazers. Nothing can compete with how great he was in Game 6, however. When his team needed him the most and after a slow start, he simply took over in the second half.

The Thunder defense did all it could but had no chance of stopping Curry in the third quarter. He hit long shots using his lightning-quick release and drove to the rim when they played him too close. Then, in the fourth quarter, he hit huge shots to allow the Warriors to close the gap and ultimately take the lead. The dagger floater was just the finishing touch on a virtuoso performance by the MVP, one that he will have to repeat in Game 7 for his team to reach the finals for the second year in a row.

Klay Thompson saved the Warriors season

Curry started out slow. Green did a little bit of everything but wasn"t dominant and struggled with foul trouble. The biggest reason why the Warriors were in it during the tough stretches and were in a position to make their move was Klay Thompson, who went off for 41 points and broke the record for three-pointers in a playoff game with 11.

Thompson has been the forgotten star for the Warriors all season long. It was understandable to overlook him, as Curry became the best player alive and Green became a bona fide superstar. They have the ball in their hands while Thompson moves without it, opening space that wouldn"t be there as he cuts but rarely getting the credit he deserves. He was one of the best players in the league but at times it was hard to notice it.

In Game 6, however, it was impossible to miss his greatness. Thompson was a monster and without him, there wouldn"t be a Game 7.

Mark Clattenburg awards contentious penalty in second-half of Champions League final

REAL MADRID VS ATLETICO MADRID - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL - PREVISÃO CHAPADA - FIFA 16

It had all been going so well for English referee Mark Clattenburg.

The English referee came into this match on the back of a difficult few weekscriticised for his performance in the FA Cup final between Manchester United and Crystal Palace, as well as Tottenham"s bad-tempered 2-2 draw against Chelsea but the first half of the Champions League final had been a relatively uneventful affair.

Not so the second-half. Within a few minutes of the half beginning,Pepe lunged forward to prevent Fernando Torres from receiving the ball just within Real Madrid"s penalty area, only to send the ex-Chelsea striker sprawling to the turf.

Torres immediately appealed for the decision and Clattenburg was forced into a decision: penalty, or no penalty? He opted for the former.

Warriors stave off elimination to send West finals back to OKC

Klay Thompson"s 11 3-Pointers | Warriors vs Thunder | Game 6 | May 28, 2016 | 2016 NBA Playoffs

OAKLAND, Calif. -- "We ain"t going home! We"re not going home!" Stephen Curry screamed at the top of his lungs.

No, his Golden State Warriors are going back to Oklahoma City, after keeping alive their title reign and the winningest season in NBA history for at least one more game.

Curry scored 31 points, raising his arms in the early moments to fire up Golden State"s raucous crowd, and the defending champions staved off elimination with a 120-111 victory over the Thunder on Thursday night in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals.

"We just did what we"re supposed to do. We"re supposed to win at home," Curry said. "We know what we still have to do going forward. ... We knew if we didn"t win we were going home. There"s no other motivation you need."

  • The Warriors staved off elimination against the Thunder in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals, but finding the winning touch in OKC may require an extra dose of Warriors-style fun.

  • Kevin Durant (40 points) and OKC hoped to finish Golden State in the West finals, but the Warriors held on to win 120-111, cutting OKC"s lead to 3-2.

  • Russell Westbrook laughed and covered his face Thursday night when asked whether Stephen Curry was an underrated defender. It wasn"t the OKC guard"s first perceived slight of the two-time MVP.

For all the speculation about the current state of Curry"s beat-up body -- that troublesome ankle, sore knee or tender elbow -- he did it all.

"I thought he looked like 91 percent," coach Steve Kerr cracked. "He came out and played a really good game. That"s all I can tell you. He"s going to compete every night. He had an excellent night and helped us get it done."

Led by Curry, the Warriors looked like their old winning selves again.

The MVP made a snazzy layup late and dished out six assists, and Klay Thompson had 27 points as Golden State sent the best-of-seven series back to Oklahoma City for Game 6 on Saturday night. The Warriors trail 3-2 and are trying to become only the 10th team to rally from a 3-1 deficit.

"None of us want to go home," Thompson said. "We"re having too much fun out there."

Kevin Durant scored 40 points and Russell Westbrook had 31 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and five steals for the Thunder, trying for the fifth NBA Finals appearance in franchise history and first championship since moving from Seattle.

The record-setting, 73-win Warriors, coming off their first back-to-back defeats all season, had been blown out in two losses at Oklahoma City by a combined 52 points.

"We have to take that game and travel," Curry said of keeping momentum.

Durant"s 3-pointer with 4:34 left got the Thunder to within 103-98, then Curry answered with a three-point play.

Curry scored seven points in a 58-second stretch of the second quarter and hit more big shots late, but the Thunder didn"t go away easily.

"I liked our will, I liked our fight," Kerr said. "We were embarrassed in OKC the last couple games."

Trailing 58-50 at halftime, Oklahoma City came out of the break with a 9-2 run. Westbrook"s 3-pointer with 6:06 left in the third put Oklahoma City ahead 68-67 for its first lead. But Golden State led 81-77 going into the fourth and began the final period with an 8-0 burst.

"We didn"t shoot a particularly good percentage when we got into the lane and got into the deep paint," Thunder coach Billy Donovan said. "We had our opportunities."

Curry shot 9-for-20 and also had five steals, and Thompson had his 11th 20-point game for the second straight postseason despite shooting 2-for-9 from 3-point range. After struggling the past two games, Draymond Green had 11 points and 13 rebounds a day after receiving some encouraging words from Kobe Bryant on the phone.

"We really relied on the entire team tonight, which is when we"re at our best," Curry said.

Kerr said he figured his Warriors might have an edge against the percentages of teams having trailed 3-1 because they"re the defending champs and were playing at home, where they have been nearly unbeatable.

He wasn"t surprised to see this team respond so well.

"We played with great desperation," Kerr said. "I knew how we would play. This is a championship team."

Kerr called for center Andrew Bogut to do more and the 7-footer delivered with a playoff career-high 15 points and 14 rebounds for his second double-double this postseason and seventh of his career.

Marreese Speights had a pair of three-point plays on follow shots and a 3 in the second quarter to give Golden State a nice lift off the bench. He had nine points in four minutes during that stretch and 14 points overall for his fifth double-digit scoring game this postseason.

"Their bench came in and made shots, made plays for them," Durant said. "We know we"re going home. We can"t relax."

Golden State made 31 of 34 free throws.

With his 1,248th career postseason point in the third, Curry passed Wilt Chamberlain (1,246) for second place on the franchise"s playoff scoring list.

"That"s who he is, that"s what he"s done, and that"s what"s made him a very good player," Donovan said.

The Warriors" sudden plummet is sending shock waves from Oakland to Las Vegas.
