Be Careful, OKC Thunder, You Have the Tiger by the Tail

Oklahoma City Thunder vs Golden State Warriors - Game 2 - Full Highlights | 2016 NBA Playoffs

Getting the Golden State Warriors" full attention is the mother of all mixed blessings.

For betterandworse, the Oklahoma City Thunder have done it.

OKC"s truly impressive 108-102 Game 1 victorymarked by attentive defense, resiliency, shrewd lineup decisions and a Russell Westbrook explosionforced the Warriors to briefly consider their own mortality. That"s not something that happens often, but the prospect of an 0-2 series hole galvanized the Dubs, resulted in swift, thorough, terrible-to-behold retribution.

Golden State buried the Thunder in Game 2 by a final score of 118-91, running its record after losses to an unfathomable 12-0this season.

And there"s the root of what should be some seriously conflicted Oklahoma City emotions heading into Sunday"s Game 3 at home: The Warriors, with a 100 percent success rate, respond to defeats with overwhelming victories. And more broadly, the more severe the failure, the more focused and complete the subsequent triumph.

Let"s unpack this.

The Thunder have a lot to be happy about.

Their Game 1 effort proved the defense that defined an easy elimination of the San Antonio Spurs was real. Oklahoma City forced Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson into rushed second-half shots, switched liberally, produced turnovers and ultimately held the best offense in the league to 14 fourth-quarter points.

Though Game 2 played out differently, the Thunder must still be encouraged by the fact that they"re in good position despite not getting simultaneous strong performances from Westbrook and Kevin Durant. The former was terrific Monday but struggled Wednesday. The latter scored efficiently in Game 2 but turned the ball over far too often.

Westbrook and Durant are going to play well in the same game (for thewhole game) eventually; Golden State is like everyone else in this specific regard: It can"t keep both superstars under wraps for an entire series.

More granularly, Westbrook did well to stifle Curry in Game 1, hounding him off the ball (with help), denying touches and goading the MVP into too many one-on-one attacks.

These are all positives, and the most encouraging thing about Oklahoma City"s performance in the series" first game was its understated reaction to success.

"What"s to celebrate?" Durant rhetorically asked, per Ben Golliver of SI.com. "We didn"t win the championship. We"re playing in the Western Conference Finals against a great team...It was a good win for us, but we"re not going to be jumping up and down, chest-bumping on the court. We"ve got a lot more basketball to play."

See that? Perspective.

Similarly, there was no panic after Game 2.

"Move on," Durant said, per Royce Young of ESPN.com. "We just move past it and figure out what we have to do better. No crazy emotions."

The Thunder got their split in Oakland. Home-court advantage, for now, is theirs.

But they should be wary of awakening the Warriors with that series-opening win. All those good things they did to take a 1-0 lead pushed the Warriors to a point of focus (perhaps even desperation) they"ve rarely reached. Golden State got serious in Game 2, leveraged all of its talent, limited its spurts of inattention and tuned key strategic elements.

Steve Kerr always talks about appropriate fear, which makes the Warriors inappropriately good.

"Being down 1-0, we had that fear," Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said, per Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle. We knew we needed a win badly, and we responded well. Now, weve got to go there and win a game."

The Warriors rendered Andre Roberson unplayable by doubling down on Draymond Green, leaving him to play free safety. Enes Kanter, after a solid second half in Game 1, was so relentlessly targeted in Game 2 that he may now occupy the same unusable category as Roberson. Gradually, Golden State is stripping away Oklahoma City"s options.

Salvation might have to come in the form of an all-out Westbrook inferno, but is it realistic to ask for his trademark maniacal aggression on offensewhile also expecting the perfect defensive focus necessary to keep Curry from shaking loose? Little in Westbrook"s history suggests he can do both for long stretches.

And Curry"s 15 points in under two minutes of Game 2"s third quarter proved the MVP needs only the briefest lapse to decide a contest.

The biggest concern for the Thunder incorporates all of the preceding worries and rolls them into one: Golden State made its adjustments after Game 1. It found ways to exploit the Thunder"s switches and devote more of its own defensive attention to Durant and Westbrook.

Oklahoma City must now make adjustments to counterthose adjustments, and that"s something no opponent has managed to do against these Warriors. Just ask the Memphis Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavaliers, who pushed Golden State to make major strategic changes last year and then had absolutely no answer afterward.

Few teams even reach the point of forcing the Warriors to change. There"s a small victory in that for the Thunder, and this team"s ability to make Golden State work is yet another sign it may be the Warriors" most formidable opponent in the last two years.

Paradoxically, that"s the scariest aspect of all.

The Warriors can"t help but recognize the Thunder as the most serious obstacle they"ve faced, and as a result, they"re fully engaged in a way they rarely are. Golden State won 73 games with sporadic focus, and Oklahoma City did enough to sharpen that focus, to dial it all the way in.

The Thunder proved in Oakland they could beat the Warriors, that they could threaten them. But if this season showed anything, it"s this: You really, reallydon"t want to face the Dubs when they feel threatened.

OKC Thunder"s Enes Kanter happy to be celebrating birthday amid Western Conference Finals

San Antonio Spurs vs OKC Thunder - Game 6 - Full Highlights - May 12, 2016 - 2016 NBA Playoffs

Friday was Enes Kanter"s 24th birthday. And the Oklahoma City Thunder center enjoyed it immensely. He chatted with The Oklahoman on Friday after practice.

Q: How much fun are these Western Conference Finals?

A: You know what? I"m having the best birthday, because the years before, I was at home, eating food and getting fat. Now I"m trying to battle for the Western Conference Finals. Definitely the best birthday. I"m definitely having fun. Not just me. Everybody"s having fun. We just have to go out there and play basketball and have some fun.

What did your teammates do for your birthday?

They just sang. I was expecting some gifts. But nobody brought me anything. That"s horrible.

Does anyone sing particularly well?

Cam (Payne) and Josh (Huestis) did. I wanted Cam to dance. He didn"t dance. He actually likes to dance.

The Thunder big men dominated Game 1, but the Warrior big men dominated Game 2? How do you reverse that?

The second game, they came out ready. They were physical. They got like 15 offensive rebounds. That"s definitely unacceptable. The third game, we just have to come out with the same mindset we had in the first game. Bring a lot of physicality. Use our size. Because we have really good bigs. Punish them down there. Just go out there and do our job.

You guys are doing a lot of switching on defense, which means when the Warriors screen, you"re suddenly guarding Steph Curry or Klay Thompson. How are you handling that?

It"s definitely different than every team we play against, because we"re switching, we"re blitzing. Chasing all those guards, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson. Different than what we did in the regular season. We"re going to adjust it and it"s going to work out really well for us. We"ve been really working on it.

Ruby"s Diner fire spreading to Seal Beach Pier

WATCH: Popular Seal Beach Pier in Calif. up in flames; restaurant may have caught fire

SEAL BEACH >> Black smoke filled the sky and flames burned bright orange Friday morning as a fire inside the closed Rubys Diner at the end of the Seal Beach Pier burned for more than an hour.

PHOTOS: Blaze erupts at abandoned Rubys Diner on Seal Beach Pier

A fire started around 7:35 a.m. inside the restaurant, and firefighters were pumping water through standpipes at the end of the pier to try to contain the fire, but it spread underneath, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said.

Four fire boats from Long Beach Fire Department, one from the Orange County Sheriffs Department and Seal Beach Marine Safety responded to assist from the ocean, Concialdi said. Originally eight boats were called to help, but some didnt make it.

About 70 firefighters from OCFA, Long Beach and Huntington Beach also responded.

The fire was initially knocked down at 9:05 a.m., Concialdi said, but flames re-emerged around 10:45 a.m.

The pier does not have stability issues, but the structure has been destroyed, Concialdi said.

At some point Friday morning, a standpipe at the end of the pier malfunctioned, causing firefighters to rely more heavily on about 2,000 feet of hoses to battle the flames, Concialdi said.

The pier is a quarter-mile long, OCFA Capt. Larry Kurtz said. (Firefighters) have to lay down hose all the way to the building by hand and each of those rolls weighs about 90 pounds. Its very taxing work.

A firefighter was injured while battling the blaze and was taken to Los Alamitos Medical Center, Concialdi said.

OCFA and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigators began examining the charred remains of Rubys Diner and an adjacent structure around 11:30 a.m., although the buildings were still smoldering and roofs completely caved in.

Fire officials were investigating the remains of the building after the flames were extinguished. It was unclear how long it would take to determine a cause.

Electrical, gas and water lines run under the piers wooden planks and it was an electrical wiring short that caused a fire that badly burned the pier on May 15, 1992.

Rubys Diner closed in January 2013, and the building has been vacant and fenced off since then.

Michael Pless Jr., one of the owners of M&M Surfing School based in Seal Beach, said he was surfing when he smelled smoke before seeing flames under the pier.

Do I smell something cooking? he said he thought when he smelled the fire.

Shortly after, Pless said he saw six firefighters hanging off a Seal Beach Police Department patrol car speeding toward the fire.

David Gillispie, 26, was surfing with Pless and was about 200 feet away from the pier when the fire started.

There were chunks of wood falling into the water, Gillispie said.

Robert Christiansen, 61 of Anaheim was sitting on his beach chair facing the ocean when he spotted the smoke.

I thought Maybe theyre doing some sort of control cleanup fire; I hope its not what I think it is, he said.

But then he saw the smoke building up and emergency crews arriving.

Firefighters told the fishermen and pedestrians on the pier to vacate as the smoke continued to build.

Its pretty serious; hopefully theyll get it under control, Christiansen said.

Rachel Kuryan, who lives nearby, walked out to see the fire with her dog and a friend.

She said some of her fondest childhood memories involve going to the Seal Beach Pier with her family.

(Rubys) is where my mom would come for her birthday, Kuryan said. She doesnt even like hamburgers.

Kuryan hopes the pier, which is the second longest wooden pier in California, will be restored.

The good news, its a small section of the pier and hopefully it will be open very soon, Kurtz said.

Shane Black"s Latest Movie, The Nice Guys, Takes Us Back to 1970s Los

The Nice Guys Review! - Cinefix Now

Pollution and the p**n industrytwo constants in 1970s Los Angelesbecome intertwined in a vast conspiracy that threatens the environment, the economy, and the lives of a colorful cast of characters in director Shane Blacks latest, The Nice Guys. After the death of a famous adult-film actress, private detective Holland March (Ryan Gosling) forms an unlikely alliance with enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) to track down a missing girl who holds the key to several murders. Black, who is known for Iron Man 3 and Lethal Weapon, cowrote the film with Anthony Bagarozzi and recruited production designer Richard Bridgland to bring the seedy vibe of the city to life.

Bridgland was immediately faced with a challenge: He would have to re-create 1970s Los Angeles in modern-day Atlanta. Atlanta is full of green trees, while L.A. has that wonderful stark desert look, says Bridgland. We had to imagine places with all the trees digitally removed. As long as I can find the right architectural elements, I hoped that I could add L.A. to it.

Fortunately, Atlanta had a few surprising gems that were perfect for the production. For a big scene that takes place at the residence of p**n king Sid Shattuck, Bridgland and his team found hip-hop producer Dallas Austins home, which is based on John Lautners Silvertop House. It was bizarre, Bridgland says. Here was this space-age Lautner house dropped into the suburbs of Atlanta. The citys Hilton Hotel proved to be the ideal setting to stage the 1978 L.A. Auto Show. It was built in 1976, and it pretty much hasnt changed since then, he says. We boarded over their tennis courts to create the auto-show opening party.

Bridgland drew on his extensive research, including old Super 8 films and documentary photographs, to add authentic period elements. I used classic 70s designers like Verner Panton quite heavily for the furniture, he notes. Even the Hollywood sign gets a 70s makeunder. The whole thing was was falling down. It just seemed like the perfect metaphor for what Shane was saying and what the city was about.
