USA TODAY media columnists weigh in on the ever-changing story of Brian Williams aboard a military helicopter in 2003 that has recently gotten him in some hot water. The 'NBC Nightly News' anchor apologized to veterans this week. VPC

Video Transcript

Automatically Generated Transcript (may not be 100% accurate)

00:00 I'm not sure. That if I had been shot down 00:03 in a helicopter I would not be able to remember that. 00:08 I made a mistake in recalling the events of twelve years 00:12 ago I wanna apologize I set I was traveling in an 00:15 aircraft that was hit by RPG fire. I was instead in 00:19 a follow wing aircraft. We all landed after the ground fire 00:24 incidents spent two harrowing nights in a sandstorm. In the Iraq 00:28 desert. This was a bungled attempt by me to thank one 00:33 special veteran and by extension. Our brave military men and women 00:37 veterans everywhere those who have served while I did not. I 00:40 hope they know they have my greatest respect and also now 00:44 my apology. I think her as Brian's credibility he's had a 00:47 pretty good record. Being a stand up journalist and so this 00:52 is it's definitely a blemish on his record remains to be 00:55 seen whether. This affects his career. And BC is not saying 01:00 anything currently is. And and he's apologized of course but I 01:05 think some people believe that the apology. Actually. And me things 01:09 had it worse because he he seem to minimize the importance 01:13 it's a strange situation because he eases the fog of memory 01:17 let him too thin to me three member of the fact 01:20 that he wasn't in that. Helicopter that was shot that he's 01:23 talked about this in different ways over the years. Early shortly 01:26 after it happened. He seemed to remember correctly. Suddenly without knowing 01:31 why we learned we've been ordered to land in the desert 01:34 on the ground we learned the chinook ahead of us was 01:37 almost blown out of the sky and then began. Sort of 01:42 changing. Changing his tune later in blog posts and then. I'm 01:47 David Letterman show in 2013. Two of our four helicopters were 01:51 hit by ground fire including the one I was in credibility 01:55 is so key. And his explanations. That have even deepened his 01:59 problems I think I think this will melt but he has 02:02 a lot of veterans that are very upset with them. Which 02:05 is a reason this story came out. And and I I 02:09 think this will be very difficult for him to ride out. 02:13 It's interesting because he more than other news anchors has tried 02:16 to display his. Comedian society goes on on The Daily Show 02:20 and Jimmy Fallon and and and sort of jokes around. Not 02:24 pres so pop. I don't know that that will directly affect. 02:31 Is. What his culpability for this kind of incident but I 02:35 think he's maybe more broadly known to. Two viewers than just 02:39 as a news anchor and and to what degree that influences 02:42 reaction to this I don't know.

After an outcry from veterans, Brian Williams was forced to make public apology during his evening news cast wednesday night. The veterans were upset with Williams' version of an event that occurred during the early days the Iraqi war. The story, that Williams had been in a helicopter that came under attack during a mission to deliver bridge parts, has seemingly changed over the years. Watch for yourself as Williams, in his own words, describes the events on different occasions.

The original report

"On the ground we learn the Chinook ahead of us was almost blown out of the sky."

2013 Appearance on David Letterman

"Two of our four helicopters were hit, by ground fire, including the one I was in."

Williams repeated the story on air Feb 2, 2015

"When the helicopter we were traveling in was forced down after being hit by an RPG."

The apology

"I was instead in a following aircraft"

Conrad Hilton charged with disrupting flight after death threats, calling ...

LOS ANGELESParis Hiltons youngest brother was charged Tuesday with interfering with a flight crew on a trip from London during which authorities say he called other passengers peasants and made children cry with his death threats and profane tirades.

Conrad Hilton, 20, wearing a dark suit and shirt buttoned to the collar, shuffled into U.S. District Court in ankle chains with his hands manacled at his waist. A judge asked if he understood his rights and the charge, which was filed Monday and could carry a prison term of up to 20 years if Hilton is convicted.

Yes, your honour, he repeated after each question, but he didnt enter a plea. He was released on a $100,000 unsecured bond, ordered to appear for arraignment March 5 and told to continue mental health treatment.

Hiltons trouble on British Airways began moments after Flight 269 left the ground July 31. It continued for almost the entire 10 -hour flight, according to a 17-page affidavit by FBI agent David Gates.

Hilton ignored instructions to keep his seat belt fastened and began pacing the aisle as the aircraft ascended, the document said. He complained that another passenger was giving him the stink eye.

When told to return to his seat, he became unruly, and in a series of tirades, he threatened to kill several flight attendants and a co-pilot, and threatened to get them fired, the affidavit said.

I could get you all fired in five minutes. I know your boss, Hilton said in one of the documents few quotes that didnt include an expletive. My father will pay this out, he has done it before. Dad paid $300,000 last time.

Hiltons parents are socialite Kathy Hilton and businessman Rick Hilton, the grandson of the Hilton hotels founder whose name was also Conrad Hilton.

Defence lawyer Robert Shapiro, a friend of the Hilton family, said he had just received the documents and would have to review them with his client before making a statement on the case.

It may be the effects of a sleeping pill or something else, Shapiro said outside court.

The FBI affidavit says Hilton threw a punch inches from another flight attendants head that struck the bulkhead. Although the attendant, identified only by the initials O.P., said he felt threatened, he said, I dont believe he intentionally wanted to hurt me.

A co-pilot who was assigned by the captain to look after Hilton noted that he appeared to be uncoordinated, delusional and paranoid.

Hilton said he was angry over the breakup with a girlfriend and wanted to smoke marijuana. At one point, he went to a lower deck restroom and the odour of pot wafted out, the affidavit said.

When confronted by the co-pilot, Hilton ran to an upper deck restroom and smoked a cigarette, the document said. A paper towel was found wadded in the smoke detector.

Hilton eventually fell asleep and was handcuffed to his seat for the remaining 90 minutes of flight.

After landing in Los Angeles, Hilton told Gates, the FBI agent, he was returning from Greece and had taken a sleeping pill in London.

According to the affidavit, Hilton acknowledged calling other passengers peasants and said he would have killed one flight attendant if another passenger hadnt calmed him down.

A hundred per cent I would have killed him, Hilton said.

When asked if he was serious, Hilton told Gates, No, but I would have knocked him the (expletive) out.

Share National recruiting notebook: UCLA rivals...

Alabama did its Bama thing.

Will Muschamp did his recruiting defensive studs thing.

Jim Mora Jr. did his closer thing.

Wait what?

Mora and UCLA was probably the biggest surprise on National Signing Day, rivaling Auburn for the best finish down the stretch. But it wasnt enough to crack the Top 5 teams nationally.

TOP 5 RECRUITS*

*Per Rivals.com

1. Byron Cowart, DE, 6-3, 253, Seffner, Fla. (Armwood), signed with Auburn. Will Muschamps revenge. Auburns new defensive coordinator swiped the Under Armour All-American from his former team (Florida) and Southeastern Conference foe Alabama.

2. Josh Rosen, QB, 6-4, 207, Bellflower, Calif. (St. John Bosco), signed with UCLA. The long-time Bruins commit is arguably the gem of their class. Was overshadowed by Wednesdays late fireworks.

3. Iman Marshall, DB, 6-1, 194, Long Beach, Calf. (Poly), signed with USC. Marshall changed the game, announcing his decision via a music video on BleacherReport.com. Hes talented enough to back it up.

4. Martez Ivey, OT, 6-6, 290, Apopka, Fla. (Apopka), signed with Florida. Auburn was threatening to run away with Ivey, too, which would have been a nightmare scenario for the Gators. Ivey could slide in immediately at either tackle spot.

5. Derwin James, DB, 6-1, 199, Haines City, Fla. (Haines City), signed with Florida State. The Seminoles are losing DBs P.J. Williams and Ronald Darby to the NFL Draft, so James could see early playing time for the Noles.

TOP 5 CLASSES

1. Alabama: The Crimson Tide reloads again. Nick Saban and Co. signed 20 prospects rated four stars or higher by 247sports.com. Bamas seven early enrollees each ranked in the top 20 at their position nationally. The Tide hand-picked the best talent from around the nation, headlined by Top 5 players at the skill positions (RB Damien Harris, WR Calvin Ridley, QB Blake Barnett).

2. Florida State: The Seminoles lost a longtime QB commit (Kai Locksley) to Texas, but the overall strength of their class was so good it didnt affect their ranking. FSU got a steal in rangy DE Josh Sweat, who spent some time as the nations No. 1 prospect this fall before suffering a dislocated knee cap, and FSU landed multiple five-stars, including James and Sweat.

3. USC: With UCLA surging on Signing Day, the Trojans added two must-have in-state prospects in DT Rasheem Green and LB John Houston Jr. Add that to No. 1 RB Ronald Jones who was a longtime Oklahoma State commit and top-ranked DB Marshall, and the Trojans have taken back the West Coast. Due to NCAA-mandated scholarship reductions, USC wasnt able to sign more than 15 players in any class from 2012-2014. With the ban lifted, the Trojans are bringing in 24 commits.

Journalist Asks 'Fresh Off The Boat' Stars About Chopsticks

Chopsticks? Really?

The upcoming ABC series "Fresh of the Boat" is being billed as potentially groundbreaking moment for pop culture by focusing on an Asian-American family. But at a panel event during Wednesdays Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, the cast and creative team were asked about... chopsticks.

I wanted to ask the question: I love Asian culture. And I was just talking about chopsticks, and I just love all that," the unnamed reporter said, according to Deadline. "Will I get to see that, or will it be more Americanized?

"Its more about chopsticks, star chef/entrepreneur Eddie Huang replied sarcastically. Huang's memoir of the same title is the basis of the show.

Wait till Episode 5, its all about chopsticks, showrunner Nahnatchka Khan said, according to EW.

The next questioner tried to defuse the situation with a little humor.

Will we be seeing fortune cookies? the critic asked.

But it was too late. On Twitter, the reaction was swift:

Earlier this week, Huang wrote a piece for New York Magazine in which he expressed doubt in the ability of network television to be faithful to his story.

However, on Wednesday, he promised a show with some edge.

To deal with the word c***k in the pilot episode of a comedy on network television is borderline genius and insane at the same time, Huang said, according to The Wrap.

"Fresh Off The Boat" debuts on Feb. 4.

Oakland Police said officers were in the area at the time when they heard gunshots.Patrol units arrived and found a man later identified as Newtonsuffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The Pittsburg residentbegan his rap career in the late 1990s as a member of Mob Figaz, before launching a solo career in 2001.

The Jacka has collaborated with a number ofBay Area hip-hop starssuch asE-40andMistah F.A.B. His latest album,What Happened To The World, was released just two months ago.

Fans took to Twitter to express their disbelief and grief.

Bay Area singer Goapele tweeted her condolences.

On Tuesday, his fans paid tribute to him with a memorial near where he was killed.

Editors notes:

News of the rappers death also triggered a flood of comments from both mourners and critics on the CBS San Francisco website and theKPIX CBS Facebook page. Predictably, many tookthe opportunity to anonymously spew racist hate about the artist. Wehave chosen to highlight commentsthat we thought were the most thought-provoking before closing the comments on this story.Commenters can continue toregister their opinion under their names on the KPIX CBS Facebook page.

Among the commenters were those pointing out the obvious: calling out other commenters for their insensitivity.

Yesenia CastellanosIs that comment necessary? Think about how you sound right now. And by the way this is someone Ive been listening to since I can remember and this happened by my house. And no, this is not just some rapper, this is someones family member and friend taken away. Have some respect.

Others maintained such a violent death was predictable and questionedwhether a man who seemingly celebrated a so-called thuglifestyle should even be mourned.

Jessica R. AbbitIt is sad. But you up the likelihood of getting shot in the head if you live a life with gangs as your posse. People who do not go looking for trouble, who do not do drugs or hang with those who do, who stay home at night, etc are not likely to end up with a bullet in their brain. Use common sense & live a clean life and you live longer.

There were observations on why a successful artist should be demonized for the imagery he portrays, while other music genres and artists that also employ disturbing images are not.

Loch121have you ever heard his music?Should Joe pesci be killed for playing gangsters in movies?Should Johnny cash have been shot for making music about the rough life?He made gangster music for his genre. You dont know how this man lived.

Common SenseA lot fools on here posting. The Jack had NO criminal record. He rapped about what he saw in the streets, and also pushed young people to have confidence in themselves and go for what they want in life, never give up. He was loved by everyone who met him, a very energetic and giving person. Something is wrong with a lot of posters on here. How can you judge when you are on the outside looking in through a stained glass window?

zeppoTo the people who are so happy to see the jacka killed, would you celebrate the same way if Eminem was shot and killed? Maybe those same people would. Im just wondering. Is it because hes a rapper, or just because hes black, that some people are happy to see him gone? Im not asking rhetorically; I really dont know the answer.

GuestEveryone is entitled to their own opinion, but please be respectful of it. The Jacka was a friend, brother, father, and many more. I wouldnt want my loved ones to be treated with such disrespect if they passed, and Im sure many of you feel the same. This is hitting to close to home right now. Ive been listening to the Jacka since I was 15. I woke up this morning hoping it was all a nightmare, but It was not. Im a grown man, and felt like crying like a child. The Jacka will forever be a bay area legend, and my favorite rapper. In a world full of snakes you appeared to be genuine. At one of your concerts I attended you came off the stage and showed everyone in the crowd love. You were one of the few who didnt forget where you came from. Last night when The Jacka died a part of me died as well.

Mr.GIm laughing at all these racist white people. Its funny because you dont know of them outside of there homes, or at the supermarket when your shopping, the gas station, etc. They only speak there nonsense on the computer where they wont be held accountable for there disrespect. Typical racist cowards.

Lastly, at least one commenter tried to clear up the meaning of the term jacka

A lot of people debating the name of this artist. For the record, he got his name from hip hop. when he got on the mic as a feature they would say he jacked (stole for those who dont know what jack means) the show. He would steal the show every time he performed, and therefore became the jack artist.

Charlotte McKinney Is "Dating Around," n***d Carl's Jr. Model Is "Having Fun ...

Is Carl's Jr.'s new blond bombshell Charlotte McKinney looking for a serious boyfriend?

Doesn't sound like it.

"I'm having fun right now," McKinney told me the other day. "I'm dating around."

The 21-year-old Florida native, who became an insta It Girl after the release of her n***d Carl's Jr. Super Bowl commercial, has one simple requirement when it comes the opposite s*x.

"I like funny," she said. "That's my biggest thing. If I don't laugh at you and you don't laugh at me, it's not going to work."

As I previously told you, McKinney's celeb crush is Paul Rudd because he's "hilarious."

NEWS: The best commericials of the 2015 Super Bowl

Downtime for McKinney means a lot of reality television. She admits she's a "fan" of the Real Housewives franchise. "I am," she said with a laugh. "I'm ashamed to say it, but I am. I love it. It's stupid, but it entertains me."

On the more serious front, McKinney enjoys Homeland and Sons of Anarchy and she recently saw the movie American Sniper, which she praised as "really great."

As for music, McKinney said she listens to "everything, from rap to country to electronic to dance."

"I really like Drake, Snoop Dogg and Wiz Kalifa," she said.

McKinney said her family has no problem with her stripping down for the Carl's Jr. ad. While she was wearing a bra and underwear during the shoot, the spot makes it appear as if McKinney is walking n***d through a farmer's market with strategically placed fruits and vegetables covering her naughty bits.

"My parents loved it," she said. "They thought it was great."
